ANTHONY ASHNAULT

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Year: Freshman

Highlights: The rookie sensation became the Greater
Middlesex Conference's first state champion since
2005 when former South Plainfield star Jimmy
Conroy won the 103-pound title. Ashnault rolled to
the 103 state title with a 44-0 record. He defeated
Colts Neck junior Tyler Fraley 6-5 in the state final,
erasing a 4-2 deficit with a pair of takedowns. The
second takedown came late in the third period,
shortly after Ashnault cut Fraley, giving his
opponent a 5-4 lead. Ashnault is the reigning
Greater Middlesex Conference, District 12 and
Region 3 champion. He also won an individual title
at the Morris Knolls Invitational. Ashnault is the
Home News Tribune's Wrestler of the Year.

TROY HEILMANN

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Year: Freshman

Highlights: The younger brother of senior Nick
Heilmann, who holds the school's record for career
victories, Troy placed sixth in the state tournament.
One of five outstanding freshmen on the state Group
III championship team, Heilmann also won the
Greater Middlesex Conference and District 12
tournament titles. He placed third at 112 in a loaded
weight class at the Region III Tournament.
Heilmann, who posted a 39-9 record, said he plans
to return next year to 112 pounds, where he hopes
to win a state title. Heilmann won 13 of his matches
by pin. He also won an individual crown at the
season-opening Morris Knolls Invitational.

HERIBERTO QUINTANA

PERTH AMBOY

Year: Senior

Highlights: The all-time winningest wrestler in
school history with a career record of 133-20,
Quintana is a four-time state qualifier, a four-time
district champion, a four-time region finalist and a
four-time Greater Middlesex Conference
Tournament placewinner. He ended the year with a
27-4 record following a 15-5 loss to Hunterdon
Central's Alex Shaffer in the 119-pound state final.
Quintana placed third in the state tournament a year
ago. He is the reigning GMC and District 19
champion. Quintana placed second in the GMC
Tournament as a junior and sophomore and third in
the GMCT as a freshman. Quintana excited crowds
throughout the state this season.

RAY DELANUEZ

EDISON

Year: Senior

Highlights: One of the most consistent performers
in the area over the past two years, DeLaNuez
steadily improved and his strides resulted in a Top
16 finish at the state tournament. The 125-pound
senior posted a 34-3 record on the year. He won a

second straight District 19 and a second
consecutive Region V title. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament champion,
DeLaNuez owns a 91-17 career record. He won a
second straight Elizabeth Minuteman Invitational
Tournament title. DeLaNuez defeated nemesis Mike
Pysniak of Bishop Ahr to win the district and GMC
titles.

SCOTT DELVECCHIO

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Year: Freshman

Highlights: The Tigers rolled to a 29-2 record with
a mix of veterans and newcomers. The contributions
of DelVecchio, who solidified the team's middle
weights with a 36-6 record at 130 pounds, enabled
South Plainfield to earn the No. 1 state ranking in
the New Jersey State Wrestling Coaches Association's
final poll. DelVecchio won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 12 tournaments. He was one
of nine Tigers to qualify for the state tournament,
matching a school record. DelVecchio placed third
in the Region III Tournament. He won 12 matches by
pin.

SAM EMBURGIA

MONROE

Year: Senior

Highlights: A four-time state tournament qualifier,
Emburgia, who previously won just one bout in
Atlantic City, made the most out of his final trip to
Boardwalk Hall, pinning nemesis Nick Heilmann of
South Plainfield in the third-place final. The 135-
pounder had lost all three previous meetings to
Heilmann including two setbacks in the Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament finals. Emburgia
won his second straight Region V title (he was
named Outstanding Wrestler in 2009) and repeated
as a District 20 champion. Emburgia posted a 36-5
record on the year. He led Monroe with a team-best
23 pins.

CONOR HAYES

OLD BRIDGE

Year: Senior

Highlights: A four-year varsity letterwinner, Hayes
holds the school's career record with 120 victories.
He broke the previous mark of 114 wins, which
Kevin Jacoutot set 29 years ago, during the Region
V Tournament. Hayes went 40-4 on the year. He
won a District 20 title and a Region V championship
at 140 pounds. Hayes placed sixth in the state
tournament. Hayes is a three-time district champ
and two-time region champ. In 2009-10, he won
titles at the Matawan Invitational and in the
Hunterdon Central Tournament. Hayes placed third
in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
rebounding from a 2-1 semifinal loss to South
Plainfield's Corey Stasenko with an 8-2 victory over
Edison's Devon Coates in the consolation finals.

RYAN SACCO

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Year: Senior

Highlights: Sacco clinched South Plainfield's 26-24
victory over High Point in the state Group III final
with a memorable 6-5 win over Joey Gaccione in
four overtimes. The victory was the most important
of the four-year starter's career. He went on to place
seventh in the state tournament with a 7-2 decision
over Rahway's Diego Chavez. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference, District 12 and Region III
champion at 145 pounds finished with a 40-5
record. He owns a 107-30 career mark. A three-time
district champion, Sacco led South Plainfield to a

second-place finish at the Virginia Duals.

COLIN HEWITT

FRANKLIN

Year: Junior

Highlights: A nagging right quadriceps muscle
strain forced Hewitt to miss two brief stretches of
the season. The strain caused Hewitt, who posted a
27-3 record, to lose a bout by injury default in late
December. The 152-pounder placed in the state
tournament for the third straight year. Hewitt lost a
tough 2-1 decision to Delsea senior Eric Reger for
third. Many anticipated that matchup to actually be
the state final. Hewitt's only other setback was a
stunning loss — by pin — to Kingsway's Joseph
Renard in the state tournament prequarterfinals.
Owner of a 93-15 career record, Hewitt is a two-
time district and two-time region champion. Hewitt
led a remarkable turnaround at Franklin, which
reached the North 2 Group IV final during the
school's first NJSIAA Team Tournament appearance.

FRANK BOZZOMO

MIDDLESEX

Year: Junior

Highlights: An injury from football season —
Bozzomo started at linebacker and fullback — forced
the Middlesex standout to ease into the wrestling
season. He was held out of a late December
tournament at Hunterdon Central but soon picked
right up where he left off a year ago, finishing 31-3
on the year to improve his career mark to 87-23.
Unlike previous seasons, when Bozzomo was forced t
o wrestle up in class because the Blue Jays were
loaded at his more natural weight, the junior was
able to compete at 160 pounds. There, he won the
District 12 and Region III tournaments and finished
Top 12 in the state tournament. A three-time district
placewinner, Bozzomo finished runner-up in the
Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
dropping a 3-2 decision to Piscataway's Tevin Shaw.

BRENDAN VERCAMMEN

SOUTH BRUNSWICK

Year: Senior

Highlights: The senior became South Brunswick's
third state medal winner in as many years with a 3-2
victory over Plainfield's Dawud Hicks in the 171-
pound fifth-place final. Vercammen ranks third all-
time in victories at South Brunswick with a 97-21
career record. He posted a 37-4 mark this season.
Vercammen won titles at the District 20, Greater
Middlesex Conference and Mustang Classic
tournaments. He finished second at the Region V
Tournament. Last year, Vercammen won a region
title, a district title and placed second in the GMCT.
Vercammen wrestled with an intellect that matched
his physical strength, according to his coaches.

MIKE WAGNER

SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Year: Senior

Highlights: Wagner, who will continue his career at
Rutgers University, finished second in the state
tournament at 189 pounds, falling to three-time
state champion Andrew Campolattano of Bound
Brook. Wagner ended the year with a 40-2 record.
Both losses came to Campolattano. Wagner ends his
stellar career with a 90-14 career mark. He won
titles in the Greater Middlesex Conference, District
12, Region III and Morris Knolls Invitational
tournaments. He placed fourth in the state
tournament a year ago. One of South Plainfield's
team captains, Wagner set an example in the
wrestling room with his work ethic and strong

leadership, according to his coaches.

MARC TYSON

MONROE

Year: Senior

Highlights: Known more as one of the state's best
football players, Tyson, who starred at linebacker
and defensive end for the Central Group III c
hampion Falcons, began wrestling just four years
ago. Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport,
Tyson capped his career with a fifth-place finish at
215 pounds in the state tournament. Tyson wrestled
with more brute strength than technique, but the
results were a 37-4 record, including 16 pins. His
pin of eight seconds was the fastest on the team and
one of the fastest in the area. He also led Monroe in
victories. Tyson defeated Perth Amboy's Joel Perez to
win the Region V title. He also won a Greater
Middlesex Conference and District 20
championship.

RYAN MOSKWA

PERTH AMBOY

Year: Junior

Highlights: One of the area's most improved
grapplers, Moskwa raised his career record to 52-
28 after finishing with a 34-6 mark this season. The
gifted heavyweight was one of the constants on a
Perth Amboy team that was in a perpetual state of f
lux. He was a steadying influence on a young team
that lost several competitors to injury, defection and
discipline. Moskwa won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 19 tournament titles. He
placed third in Region V and was a Top 12 finisher
at the state tournament. Last year, Moskwa was
second in the district and sixth in the GMC.

NJ WRESTLING: Middlesex County season in review

NJ WRESTLING: Middlesex County season in review
Mike Berg, March 20, 2010 10:53 p.m.

Anthony Ashnault (103 pounds) of South Plainfield is The Star-Ledger's Middlesex County Wrestler of the Year. - (Andrew Mills/The Star-Ledger)
Wrestler of the year: Anthony Ashnault accomplished just about everything a wrestler could achieve in one season -- and he's only a freshman.

"The goal was to win a state championship for South Plainfield and, after that, win another state championship," said Ashnault, who upended top-seeded Tyler Fraley of Colts Neck, 6-5, to collect the 103-pound state title at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on March 7. "This season was everything I'd hoped for, and I got a little extra by going undefeated."

Ashnault cruised to a 44-0 record and led his South Plainfield squad, the final No. 1-ranked team in The Star-Ledger Top 20, to its first state title since 2007. In the process, he earned the first Greater Middlesex Conference, District 12 and Region 3 titles of his young career.

In addition, Ashnault won six matches at the 30th Annual Virginia Duals, a high-powered tournament that hosted some of the country's top teams in January.

"I prepared for every match the same way, but Virginia was my first challenge where I knew there were going to be national quality kids and I had to perform my best," he said. "Once I beat some big names there, I knew I could do a lot in the state."

Ashnault performed just as well on the state tournament stage, knocking off Toms River North's Kyle McNulty in the quarterfinals and Jackson's Brian Hamann in the semifinals, the eventual third and fourth-place finishers, respectively.

"I think he outworks every three-pounder in the state," said South Plainfield coach Kevin McCann, a state champion for South Plainfield at 135 pounds in 1991. "He's never missed a practice, never sat out for an injury. He's a workhorse, and he's a great kid."

Ashnault joins a star-studded history of 103-pound state champions from South Plainfield, including Jimmy Conroy, who won the Greater Middlesex Conference's last state title in 2004, and Matt Anderson, a third-year volunteer on the South Plainfield coaching staff who won a title in 2000.

"I remember going to the Meadowlands and watching Matt Anderson," said Ashnault. "When you're sitting in the bleachers, it looks so much bigger than when you're on the floor wrestling. I wanted to be there and I wanted to wrestle on the big stage."

Team of the year: South Plainfield (29-2) knocked off top-ranked High Point, 26-24, in the NJSIAA Group 3 state championship on Feb. 14 to earn its fourth state crown in the past six seasons and solidify itself as The Star-Ledger's No. 1 team in New Jersey. The Top 20 Trophy for finishing No. 1 in the state rankings is South Plainfield's first.

The school fell in two matches this season - a 30-29 loss to St. Mark's of Delaware and a 34-20 setback to No. 4 Jackson in January - before rebounding to collect its sixth Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title in the last seven years and its state-record 26th consecutive district title when it captured District 12.

The school qualified nine wrestlers for the state tournament to tie a school record while crowning a school-record five Region 3 champions. It then eclipsed another school record by collecting five individual state tournament medals from Ashnault (first at 103), Troy Heilmann (sixth at 112), Nick Heilmann (fourth at 135), Ryan Sacco (seventh at 145) and Mike Wagner (second at 189).

SOUTH PLAINFIELD VIDEOS

Coach of the year: The odds are stacked against Craig Girvan of Highland Park, where he assembles a team from a pool of approximately 400 students, is overshadowed by a successful football program and is just 10 years removed from one of the lowest points a team could reach.

"In 2001, we finished the year with just four kids and we didn't win a match," said Girvan, who joined Highland Park as an assistant in 2001. "But we've been working ever since to establish the program and we now have the type of athletes that can really take the program to the next level."

Girvan, who took over as head coach in 2007, led his team to an 11-11 mark this season and sent Tyler Rios and D'Andre Bell to the state tournament, the first time in the school's history that it sent competitors to wrestle on the state level. Bell, a senior 130-pounder, was a Region 5 runner-up while Rios, a 189-pound sophomore, earned District 19 gold before placing third in the region.

"I now have a lot of freshman and sophomore kids that are relatively new to the sport, and I think they will progress," Girvan said. "I think Tyler will be our leader, and he will inspire our younger kids to reach that higher level."

Broken records: Conor Hayes, a 140-pound senior who placed sixth in the state this season, set Old Bridge's career victory record by compiling a 120-31 mark.

He went 40-4 this season and lost just one match prior to the state tournament, a 2-1 loss to South Plainfield's Corey Stasenko in the GMC Tournament semifinals, to break two-time state champion Kevin Jacoutot's school record of 114 victories that has stood since 1982.

"Conor's been a very solid part of the program for four years," said coach Bryan Garnett. "He made good strides in strength this year, coming in at 140 after he wrestled at 103 as a freshman and sophomore and 125 as a junior. He's a leader on the team and he's worked extremely hard."

South Brunswick eclipsed a team record by piling up 18 victories this season, snapping the previous mark of 17 victories, and could have had more if it were not for five weather-related match cancellations.

Brendan Vercammen, a 171-pound senior who collected a fifth-place finish in the state tournament, captained the team with seniors Frank Capraro (125 pounds) and Jeff Goldhagen (189), who each placed third at District 20. Vercammen was second in Region 5 and won the District 20 title.

"As you coach, you tell the kids that chemistry is a very important thing, and these guys let the team know what the expectations were," said South Brunswick coach Joe Dougherty. "We had a lot of sophomores in the lineup, and our seniors were outstanding with them."

Second best: Senior Heriberto Quintana of Perth Amboy fell to Hunterdon Central's Alex Shaffer, 15-5, in the 119-pound state final to improve on his third-place finish at 112 pounds in 2009. South Plainfield's Mike Wagner, a senior, dropped a 9-4 decision to Bound Brook's Andrew Campolattano in the 189-pound title bout to improve on his fourth-place finish at 171 pounds last winter. Campolattano has won three state championships.

Victorious Vercammen - HNT Wrestling Notebook: Monroe's Emburgia finally gets nemesis

Victorious Vercammen - HNT Wrestling Notebook: Monroe's Emburgia finally gets nemesis

Brendan Vercammen became South Brunswick's third medalist in as many years with a 3-2 victory over Plainfield junior Dawud Hicks, the reigning Union County Tournament champion, in the 171 fifth-place final.

"I wanted to place Top 8 and I got fifth," Vercammen said. "In all the state rankings I wasn't ranked. I wasn't predicted to place, so it feels good."

In their only previous meeting, Hicks pinned Vercammen during a summer tournament. The duo train together at the same club, The Edge.

Vercammen familiarized himself with Hicks' style even further by watching Hicks closely in a 6-4 wrestleback round win over Voorhees' Mike Hafke.

"I watched him wrestle Hafke and Hafke would take shots and Dawud countered him and got the takedowns, so I was kind of anxious to shoot," Vercammen said.

"I'm smart in the way I wrestle. I'll be aggressive, but I know (when) a guy is good at countering shots, I'll try to take it on the mat and go upper body."

HNT Wrestling Notebook: Monroe's Emburgia finally gets nemesis

By GREG TUFARO
STAFF WRITER

A three-time region champion and four-time state qualifier, Sam Emburgia had little to show for his repeated trips to Atlantic City until Sunday.

The Monroe High School senior pinned nemesis Nick Heilmann of South Plainfield to place third in the 135-pound weight class at Boardwalk Hall.

Emburgia, who lost to Heilmann in three previous meetings, two of which came in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament finals, finally exorcised more than one demon.

In three prior trips to Boardwalk Hall, Emburgia won just one state tournament bout.

"I didn't understand what was going on," Emburgia said of his prior track record. "I didn't know why I kept not doing as good as I should. It's just a matter of peaking at the right time.

"That kid (Heilmann) has beaten me every time — over and over and over again. Wrestlebacks are tough. I just got on a roll and I was just beating everybody. It feels so good."

Heilmann actually appeared to be in control of the match with a near-side cradle when Emburgia quickly turned the tide.

"He went to finish a cradle and as he hit (it), I got his leg up in a Fireman's," Emburgia explained. "I backhooked his arm and caught his wrist and just stacked him up on his shoulders."

Oh Brother!

The consolation finals proved bittersweet for the Heilmann brothers as senior Nick and freshman Troy, wrestling for the last time together as members of the South Plainfield program, each lost their respective bouts.

Monroe's Sam Emburgia pinned Nick in the 135 third-place final, while Troy dropped a 4-3 decision in the 112 fifth-place final to Bloomfield's Chris Lantz.

Teammate Ryan Sacco, one of five Tigers to medal, placed seventh at 145 with a 7-2 decision of Rahway's Diego Chavez.

The older Heilmann, who had defeated Emburgia in three prior meetings, earned his third medal. Nick warmed up with Troy prior to the younger's Heilmann's bout.

"It was real special warming up with him," Troy said. "It was a real nice experience, especially throughout the year, winning a state championship on arguably the best team in South Plainfield history. "I thought I had a good tournament, but I wanted to finish on a good note. I came close, but I couldn't finish a couple of those shots at the end (of the match with Lantz).

"My coaches told me I should be proud because I got to accomplish this my freshman year. A lot of kids don't get to accomplish it until they are seniors or maybe ever."

Unlike his older brother, a team captain who holds South Plainfield's prestigious school record for career victories, Troy will return next season.

"I'll use this as motivation," Troy said of the loss. "I'm probably going to come back next year at the same weight and shoot for a state championship."

Troy said he will work out with Nick during the summer before the older Heilmann heads off to college.

"We'll probably be training during the offseason and I'm sure we will be able to look back on this one day and it will be real nice."

Victorious Vercammen

Unfitting End

A third trip to the state tournament ended in injury for Perth Amboy senior Joel Perez, whose ailing knees prevented him from competing in the consolation finals.

Perez forfeited his seventh-place bout at 215 to Wall's Andrew Marr. Perez, who missed two weeks of the season with ailing knees, ends his career with 95 wins.

He suffered a 3-2 loss to Paulsboro's Zach Greenwald, who advanced to the state finals, in the quarterfinal round.

"I just wish that Joel was healthy," Perth Amboy coach Mike Giordano said. "This is as far as his knees could take him. I think a healthy Joel could be in the finals."

Tyson Places 5th

Monroe's Marc Tyson, a senior who only started wrestling four years ago, placed fifth at 215 with a 5-1 win over DePaul Catholic's A.J. Mott

"This was awesome. I had to go out there with the most energy," Tyson said. "I left it all out there on the mat and it came out in my favor.

"I'm very satisfied. Last year I was upset. I lost in the first round. I've been working hard all year and training for this. I wanted to end my season with a win."

Rough Round

Three area wrestlers came up just short in the consolation finals with each enduring one-point losses.

Old Bridge teammates Conor Hayes (140) and Nick Orak (189) each placed sixth, while Franklin's Colin Hewitt (152) medaled for the third straight year, placing fourth.

Vercammen hopes to clean up in AC South Brunswick Post/ Princeton Packet

Vercammen hopes to clean up in AC South Brunswick Post/ Princeton Packet March 4, 2010
By Ken Weingarnter, Special Writer

Brendan Vercammen heads to this weekend’s NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall hoping to accomplish what few visitors to the gambling mecca can do – leave a winner.

Of course, it will not be easy, but Vercammen has some idea what to expect. Last year, the South Brunswick High senior won a match in the tourney and finished among the top 12 and his two losses there came against place-winning wrestlers.

Securing a place on the podium this year is Vercammen’s goal. Vikings coach Joe Dougherty believes it can happen if Vercammen goes into his matches aggressively.

”A lot of what he can do there will be premised on where he is seeded in the bracket,” Dougherty said. “His weight class is tough. He has to win his first round (tomorrow) to get to the double elimination scenario. That’s the most important part.

”There are too many times when he’s wrestling against quality competition and the first period goes by without there being any score,” he added. “It means he’s not doing enough. The more he opens up, the more scoring opportunities he creates for himself. He’s pretty athletic, so I don’t mind us getting in scrambles. If there’s no action, we’re kind of negating his athleticism.”
Vercammen’s first-round foe is Hightstown’s Greg Ratner, who is 27-7 with three losses to state qualifiers — two to Trenton’s Canaan Bethea and one to Washington Township’s Daymien Scott. He also lost to two wrestlers who finished fourth in the regions – Steinert’s Jason Miller and Toms River North’s Michael Barone.

Vercammen (33-2) finished second in last weekend’s Region 5 Tournament at Hunterdon Central High. A returning champion, Vercammen dropped an 8-0 decision to Voorhees’ Mike Hafke in the championship match. For Hafke, who missed last year’s tourney with an injury, it was career win No. 101.

”He’s got a lot of credentials,” Dougherty said about Hafke. “He was a region champ as a sophomore. He was everything that we thought he was going to be, and more. He was tough; real highly skilled. I was impressed.”

Dougherty was pleased with Vercammen’s effort.

”Brendan wrestled a good match,” he said. “He had a couple situations where he was close to scoring points. I don’t think the loss is going to affect him at all. It shouldn’t. (The loss) has to go to the backburner. You don’t want one loss to turn into two. You have to get over it. I think Brendan is mentally strong enough to not only know that, but adhere to it.

”Winning a region title might have been a goal, but ultimately we want to place at states. That dream is still alive.”

Vercammen was one of two South Brunswick wrestlers to win a District 20 title two weeks ago. Junior James Pagano, at 130, also captured a crown.

”He wrestled the best he’s wrestled all year,” Dougherty said about Pagano. “He was a man on a mission. When James wants to, he’s a pretty good wrestler. It’s a matter of James wanting to be a good wrestler. It happened that weekend and wrestled great. He wrestled without any fear whatsoever. It was nice to see.”

Pagano, who was seeded third, won his first two district bouts with pins before beating East Brunswick’s Ryan Levinsky, 7-2, for the title.

South Brunswick finished fourth in the district’s team standings. Justin Lopez finished second at 112 while Chad Capraro (103), Frank Capraro (125), Justin DeAndrea (160) and Jeff Goldhagen (189) each finished third. All advanced to the regional tourney, but only Vercammen was able to move on to the state tourney from there.

”Our goal and focus was to win the district tournament,” Dougherty said. “We told the kids if the seeds hold true, there’s no way we’re going to win the districts. Kids had to beat kids they weren’t supposed to beat, according to the seeds; which we had the ability to do. (Pagano) took that to heart. James is the one that proved it can be done, if you set your mind to it.”

NJSIAA Wrestling Notebook - Warriors' Hewitt rebounds from early-round upset

NJSIAA Wrestling Notebook -
Warriors' Hewitt rebounds
from early-round upset

By GREG TUFARO • STAFF WRITER • March 6,
2010

ATLANTIC CITY — Franklin High School junior
Colin Hewitt, a two-time state placewinner, endured
the biggest upset of the early rounds of the NJSIAA
Wrestling Tournament when Kingway's Joseph
Renard pinned him in 1:08 during Friday night's
152-pound prequarterfinals.

Hewitt rebounded to win his next two matches,
pinning Burlington Township's Cody Spatz in the
first round of wrestlebacks and defeating Madison's
Christian Mazzocchi 7-2 in the ensuing round.

"I still believe that I'm the best kid in the bracket,"
Hewitt said. "I just want to show everyone here what
I can really do. I want to show everyone here that I'm
the best at 152, and I'm going to take third (place)."

With his wrestleback semifinal victory over Roselle
Park's Russell Benner, Hewitt will get a shot at third
place.

He will face Eric Reger of Delsea, a 9-2 overtime
winner in the wrestleback semifinals over Renard.

Falcons Fly High

Monroe teammates Sam Emburgia (135) and Marc
Tyson (215) impressed in the wrestleback rounds.

Emburgia, a four-time state qualifier, will wrestle
South Plainfield's Nick Heilmann for third place.

The senior won just one match in three previous
trips to Atlantic City.

"He definitely got the monkey off his back," Monroe
coach Bill Jacoutot said. "He was able to exorcise
some demons. He did a nice job in the wrestlebacks.
He looked like he had that look on his face, like I've
been here before and I know what to expect. He got
the job done, and now he has an opportunity to
finish third, which is of course what he's looking for
at this point."

Tyson, known more for his prowess on the football
field, where he led Monroe to the Central Group III
championship, was a late-comer to the sport of
wrestling. Jacoutot said he wishes he had one more
year to work with the senior.

"He's starting to really learn how to wrestle,"
Jacoutot said. "We all know he's a tremendous
athlete, but he's learning how to win scrambles and
he's learning how to manage a match. I wish I had
more time with him. I think he's really ending the
year here on a heck of a run and with a lot of
momentum."

Tyson, who will wrestle for fifth place today, said
he, too, wishes he had one more year to work with
Jacoutot.

"I picked up a whole bunch of technique (from
Jacoutot)," Tyson said. "He brought a new element to
the table and (the Falcons) are building on that."

Heart Stopping

South Brunswick coach Joe Dougherty walked off the
mat following Brendan Vercammen's 1-0 quarterfinal
victory over St. Peter's Prep's T.J. Shea patting his
heart.

Dougherty said he didn't know how many more
close matches he could take from Vercammen, who
advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 win on an

ultimate tiebreaker over Ramapo's James Fox.

The coach got a bit of a breather in the semifinals,
but not in the fashion he wanted.

Vercammen lost by technical fall to Wallkill Valley's
Ryan Callahan, who improved to 42-0 this season.
Vercammen is wrestling for fifth place today.

Sing a Song

Al Kiley, the former coach at Madison Township and
Madison Central High School, returned to the
wrestling arena on Saturday, not as a coach, but as
a singer.

Kiley, who sings baritone, and his barber shop
quartet, Evolution, performed several songs before
the start of the semifinal round.

Other Placers

South Plainfield's Troy Heilmann (112), Old Bridge's
Conor Hayes (140) and Old Bridge's Nick Orak (189)
will all wrestle for fifth today.

Rahway's Diego Chavez (145), South Plainfield's
Ryan Sacco (145) and Perth Amboy's Joel Perez (215)
will all wrestle for seventh.

NJSIAA Wrestling Notebook: Highland Park's Rios powers into quarterfinal

NJSIAA Wrestling Notebook:
Highland Park's Rios powers
into quarterfinals

By GREG TUFARO • STAFF WRITER • March 5,
2010

ATLANTIC CITY — Teammates Tyler Rios and
D'Andre Bell became the first grapplers in Highland
Park High School's storied athletic history to qualify
for the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships.

While Bell made an early exit with a preliminary-
round loss, Rios advanced to the quarterfinals by
winning two bouts at Boardwalk Hall on Friday
night.

"I had to wrestle hard and give it all I got if I wanted
to make it to the finals," said Rios, a 189-pound
sophomore. "I had to do this for my school. Nobody
really knows about Highland Park."

Rios is one of 12 Greater Middlesex Conference
wrestlers who reached the quarterfinals. The others
are South Plainfield's Anthony Ashnault, Troy
Heilmann, Nick Heilmann and Mike Wagner, Perth
Amboy's Heriberto Quintana and Joel Perez,
Monroe's Sam Emburgia and Mike Tyson, Old
Bridge's Conor Hayes, Middlesex's Frank Bozzomo
and South Brunswick's Brendan Vercammen.

Nine other GMC grapplers are still alive in the
wrestleback rounds.

The Owls, who had just four wrestlers in their
program when head coach Craig Girvan took over
the program several years ago, are on the verge of
turning the corner. Former coach Scott Gerba
helped Highland Park gain some traction, leading
the Owls to a GMC Blue Division title, but Girvan
hopes to take the team to a new level.

In that regard, Rios is leading the way.

"This is fantastic for Highland Park and our
program," Girvan said. "We've been working a long
time to really try to get to this level. Tyler is the type
of athlete that can take you to these places.

"I think he'll be an inspiration to a lot of the young
kids. There's a lot of buzz around school. It's great
to have."

Rios improved to 32-7 with his two wins.

"It's amazing the progress he's made," Girvan said.
"He's still a young kid and coming in this year I
didn't know how he'd progress. But he's worked
really hard and he's stepping it up and obviously
he's peaking at the right time.

"He's really got his technique down. His shots are
something and he's wrestling smart. He's just got
the whole package and now it seems like it's all
coming together. I'm excited."

Ticket prices

Hours before the start of the 2010 NJSIAA Wrestling
Championships, acting state Commissioner of
Education Bret Schundler ruled that the statewide
athletics association could charge $9 for adult
admission to each round of state tournament
competition at Boardwalk Hall.

Schundler met with NJSIAA Attorney Michael Herbert
and NJSIAA Executive Director Steve Timko for about
90 minutes on Friday afternoon. He told Herbert and
Timko that the NJSIAA could raise ticket prices 200
percent above the cost of regular-season admission
fees, as permitted by a new state law which took
effect Jan. 29.

The NJSIAA initially set ticket prices at $10 and $8

for adults and students and senior citizens,
respectively. Tickets have been on sale since Dec.
15. The NJSIAA sold approximately 3,500 tickets in
advance.

Herbert said he did not yet know if or how the
NJSIAA would refund patrons who purchased tickets
prior to Schundler's ruling. Schundler ruled on
Thursday that tickets for seniors and students must
be $2.

"The commissioner was extraordinarily considerate,"
Herbert said. "He listened to our point of view. He
felt the language of the statute did not allow us to
charge more than $2 for students and did allow us
to go 200 percent (above regular-season
admission) for adults, which means $9.

"We went in there thinking disaster and came out
with some degree of hope," Herbert said. "We still
believe the statute should not be interpreted to
disallow us from charging seniors and children an
appropriate amount of money."

Herbert said the NJSIAA is still working with the
commissioner to determine ticket prices for other
winter sports tournaments.

Herbert said Schundler will allow the NJSIAA to
charge an admission fee of $10 for adults to the
state swimming Meet of Champions. Senior citizens
and students, however, must be admitted to the
event free of charge.

Herbert said he is hopeful that Schundler will allow
the NJSIAA to charge $10 and $5 for adults and
students and seniors, respectively, for admission to
state ice hockey championship games at the Izod
Center and the Prudential Center.

"Working under the severe constraints of a statute
that doesn't make any sense, (Schundler) did the
best he could," Herbert said.

Tigers tale

South Plainfield advanced a school-record nine
wrestlers to the NJSIAA Tournament, making for a
ridiculously busy night for head coach Kevin
McCann and his four assistants.

"It's been OK so far," said South Plainfield assistant
coach Billy Hamilton. "(Saturday) if we get caught up
in wrestlebacks it might be a different story.

"It's been hectic but it's a good hectic. You don't
mind being busy down here. It's kind of tough b
ecause you don't get to talk to them (the wrestlers)
before they come out."

Anthony Ashnault, Troy Heilmann, Tyler Hunt, Nick
Heilmann, Ryan Sacco and Mike Wagner all
advanced for the Tigers.

Upset

Franklin junior 152-pounder Colin Hewitt was an
upset victim Friday night. Hewitt, a two-time state
placewinner and top seed in the lower bracket, was
pinned by Kingsway senior Joseph Renard in 1:08.

Today's times

The quarterfinals begin Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
with semifinals to start at 5 p.m.

HS WRESTLING: State pairings a mixed bag for locals

HS WRESTLING: State pairings a mixed bag for locals

By RICK FORTENBAUGH
Staff Writer

The pairings were released yesterday for this weekend’s New Jersey State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City. As always, it was good news for some locals and not so good for others.

Coming off his second straight region title, Robbinsville heayweight Brandon DiDonato is in the other half of the bracket from Manchester’s two-time state champion Jimmy Lawson. Should he win his opener, DiDonato will probably face Lower Cape May’s undefeated Chaz Lear, who isn’t tall, but is tough on top with legs and a power half.

Mercer’s other region champion, Trenton 171-pounder Canaan Bethea will open against Voorhees’ Mike Hafke. This is a rematch from earlier in the year when Bethea stormed back to defeat Hafke by the score of 8-7.

Eight other Mercer wrestlers will also be in Atlantic City.

Hamilton’s first wrestler to advance to states since Eric Ammirata in 2003, freshman Jared Staub will open against Jan Rosenberg of Morris Knolls at 103 pounds. Also in this weight is Robbinsville’s David Bossie, who will face Nick Wabba of Somerville.

Other Robbinsville wrestlers at states are 112-pounder Brian O’Toole and 119-pounder Jared Icenhower.

The lone Mercer representative out of Region V, Ewing 130-pounder Josh Garzio, has drawn Dymere Rappa of Paulsboro.

Trenton sophomore Ray Bethea (29-1), meanwhile, will open against a tough customer in Kittattiny’s Chris Burdge at 145 pounds.

Gregg “The Hebrew Hammer’’ Ratner of Hightstown is also in the 171-pound weight class along with Canaan Bethea. Ratner will take on South Brunswick’s Region V runner-up Brandon Vercammen of South Brunswick.

Also representing Mercer County is Allentown’s Ross Scheuerman at 160 pounds. He will face Dane McDermott of St. Joe’s Montvale.

In addition to DiDonato, other area wrestlers who received the top seeds in their half of the brackets are Burlington Township’s Kevin Devoy (112) and Willingboro’s Tyler Scotton (130).
