TEAM TO WATCH South Brunswick wrestling won five consecutive matches this season

This week in Middlesex County wrestling (High school Wrestling news)

WRESTLER TO WATCH South Plainfield's Anthony Ashnault, a 103-pound freshman, went undefeated through his six matches at the Virginia Duals last weekend, increasing his mark to 16-0 this season. Ashnault recorded a pin, two majors and three decisons to help South Plainfield, ranked No. 3 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, earn a third-place finish in the 30th annual tournament in Hampton, Va. Ashnault will be tested again at Saturday's GMC-Shore Challenge in Toms River, where he may face fellow freshman Brian Hamann, a tough 103-pounder, of Jackson.

TEAM TO WATCH South Brunswick won five consecutive matches this season, including a 44-22 victory over Perth Amboy on Jan. 6, before falling, 34-24, to Old Bridge on Saturday. The 6-2 squad lost six starters to graduation last season, but South Brunswick returned senior Brendan Vercammen, a Region 5 champion at 171 pounds in 2009. Teammates James Pagano (135 pounds), Tyler Jaramillo (140) and Jeff Goldhagen (189) each qualified for the Region 5 tournament last year. South Brunswick faces Sayreville on Saturday as it tries to avenge a 31-29 loss suffered last year and then it squares up against South Plainfield, No. 3 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, on Tuesday. MATCH TO WATCH Old Bridge (5-0) travels to No. 3 South Plainfield (13-1) tonight to try to solidify itself as one of the GMC's premier teams. Old Bridge, the defending District 20 champion, returns 10 starters, including three state qualifiers in seniors Conor Hayes (140), Steve Zafrani (171) and Nick Orak (189). All thre efinished third in Region 5 last winter. Orak could meet South Plainfield's Mike Wagner, who placed fourth at 171 pounds in 2009 and has compiled a 13-0 record this year. South Plainfield, the defending GMC tournament champion, already has eight wrestlers with more than 10 victories, including 135-pounder Nick Heilman (15-0), who placed seventh in the state at 130 pounds last season, and 119-pounder Tyler Hunt (12-3), who won the Region 3 title at 103 pounds in 2009. -Mike Berg

FLEMINGTON — Brendan Vercammen paid his dues last season. Now he’s cashing in on a trip to the Jersey Shore.

Vercammen, a junior at South Brunswick High School, qualified for the state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City by winning the Region V title at 171 pounds at Hunterdon Central yesterday. Vercammen won 2-1 in triple overtime against Hillsborough’s George Goddiess in the final.

Last year, Vercammen failed to advance from District 20 to the regional tourney, but he was wrestling up at 189 pounds. Still, he finished 21-9 last season.

“To win regions is a good feeling,” Vercammen said. “I’m wrestling my own weight this year; I was wrestling up a lot last year. I worked hard in the offseason, so it was a lot better this year. I was ready.”

Vercammen entered this season’s Region V tourney as the No. 1 seed after beating Old Bridge’s Trevor Haughney for the district crown. He is 31-7 and has faced a tough slate; two of his losses were to South Plainfield’s Mike Wagner while he also dropped matches to Paulsboro’s Jimmy Gentile and Rutgers Prep’s Kacy Epps.

“It doesn’t really surprise me. He’s paid his dues,” South Brunswick coach Joe Dougherty said. “Straight up, we go to the Brick Memorial tournament at the beginning of the year and he got some losses right off the bat. He wrestled Wagner a couple of times. Our schedule allows our kids to wrestle against quality competition throughout the year.”

In the regional final, Vercammen was able to ride out Goddiess in the second overtime period and then score an escape for the decisive point.

“The last match was tough,” Vercammen said. “He didn’t really do anything, so I had to do a lot of work. When we got to overtime, I just wanted to go as hard as I could. I’m good on top and bottom, so once I got past the first (overtime) period, I felt I could win it.”

“It was my goal to make it there this season, so I’m just going to go and have fun,” Vercammen said.

Dougherty labeled Vercammen’s situation as “win-win.”

“Only time will tell how he does next week,” Dougherty said. “That is a completely unique environment. Regardless, he’s there as a junior. If he handles it really well, that’s great. If he doesn’t, he’s been there and has got another shot at it. We’ll just go and play with our chips.”

The “suburbs’’ always feature some of the best wrestling teams in the area, witness the one-two finish by Hunterdon Central and North Hunterdon in last year’s Trentonian Area Rankings.

Look for more of the same by a group of teams that is again headed up by a Hunterdon Central squad that is positively loaded.

Hunterdon Central will enter the year again ranked No. 1 in the area. If things fall right, the Red Devils have a legitimate chance to finish as one of the top teams in the entire state and capture a Group IV Group title.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK

Coach: “Irish’’ Joe Dougherty

Last year: (16-8), No. 12 ranking in the area.

Lineup: 103-Chad Capraro (So.); Anthony Mastandino (Fr.); 112-Justin Lopez (So.; 119-Fran White (So.); 125-James Pagano (Jr.), Frank Caprano (Sr.); 130-Gin Kim (Sr.); 135-Drew Seroka (So.); 140-Tyler Jaramillo (So.); 145-Mike MacMurray (Sr.); Luke Rimmer (So.). Jake Pietrefesa (So.); 152-Jake Conover (Sr.); Zac Sherman (Sr.); 160-Justin DeAndrea (Sr.); Ali Yildiz (Fr.); 171-Brendan Vercammen (Sr.); Fabian Jackson (Jr.); 189-Jeff Goldhagen (Sr.); Lucus DelPiano (Jr.); 215-Keith Lewis (So.), Kevin Moses (Fr).

Outlook: The Vikings always have a competitive team Although the team did take some graduation hits, there’s a fair amount of experience. Vercammen is a defending District 20 champ, Pagano was second at districts, and Jaramillo and Goldhagen took thirds. South Brunswick is in a very tough conference, but will remain one of the better teams in Middlesex County.

DELAWARE VALLEY

Coach: Andy Fitz

Last year: (15-10), Skyland Conference division champion, No. 13 ranking in the area.

Lineup: 103-Cody Barbiche (Jr.); 112-Mike Pongracz (Fr.); 119-Don Angione (Jr.); 125-Bob Stevely (Sr.); 130-Trevor Stiefken (Sr.); 130/135-Kevin Guenther (Jr.); 135-Derek Zehnbauer (So.); 140-Matt Knowles (Sr.); 145-Kyle Mesce (Sr.); 145/152-Alex Janssen (Sr.); 152-Ryan Gellner (Sr.), Mark Drabich (Jr.); 160-Mike Rogers (Jr.); Will VanDoren (So.); 171-Nick Maddalena (Jr.); 189-Don Glorioso (So.); 215-Evan Zeh (Sr.); Hvy-Matt Bloom (Jr.).

Outlook: The Dogs looked much improved. The strength of the team is down below and through the middle. Barbiche was 28-11 and fourth at regions. Stevely was 29-7 and a district champ. His career record is 83-28. Stiefken was 20-7, Guenther was 8-0, Zehnbauer was 10-5, Mesce was 25-12 and Gellner won 24 bouts last year. If the upper weights come along, this team is going to win a lot of matches.

HUNTERDON CENTRAL

Coach: Steve Gibble

Last year: (18-6), District 17 champion, sectional finalist, No. 1 ranking in the area.

Lineup: 103-Grady Orr (Fr.), Tim Higginson (Fr.); 112- Ryan Callahan (So.), Matt Boylan (Jr.); 119-Alex Shaffer (So.), David Volyn (Jr.); 125- Spencer Parcel (Sr.), Nick Scarpa (Jr.); 130-Brian Bistis (Sr.), Tom Scerbo (So.); 135- Bill Vallance (Jr.), Ryan Larkin (So.); 140- Tyler Spies (So.), David Fenton (Fr.); 145- Chris Carey (Jr.), Kyle Holmes (Jr.); 152-Todd Johnson (Sr.); 160-Jerry Somma (Sr.); 171- Cody Lewis (Sr.); 189-Sam Rae (Sr.), Jake Maffucci (Jr.) Shane Fenton (Sr.), Derek Knoop Hvy: Brad Borman (Sr.).

Outlook: To put it simply, Central is stacked. Shaffer exploded on the season as a freshman last year and went 35-3 with a region title. Bistis was 38-8, first at districts, second at regions and eighth at states. Carey was 22-13 and second at districts. Johnson was 23-12, and Somma was 33-9, first at districts, second at regions and seventh in the state. It goes on and on. Lewis was 28-9, a district champ and advanced to states. Borman was 33-8, first at districts and second at regions.

NORTH HUNTERDON

Coach: Tim Flynn

Last year: (18-4), sectional champion, No. 2 ranking in the area.

Lineup: 103-Josh Giordano (Jr.); Matt Montcourdis (Fr.); 112-Pat Boyle (Jr.), Matt Wilson (So.); 119-Mike Haines (Sr.), Mike Brittain (Sr.); 125/130- Owen Boyle (Sr.); 130/135-Pat Levondowski (Sr.), Jason Behrens (Sr.); 135/140-Dave Leonard (Sr.); 140/145-Andrew Reed (Jr.); 145/152-Beau Vrancken (So.); 152/160-Chris Cancelliere (Jr.); 160-Liam Korbul (Fr.); 171-Chris Mack (Jr.), John Williams (Jr.); 171/189-Ryan Pearson (Sr.); 189-Dan Pepe (Fr.); 215-Phil Pogash (Sr.); (Hvy-Jack Delia (Jr.).

Outlook: Long-time assistant Tim Flynn has taken over for Jason Hawk, who is now Flynn’s assistant. Got that? Either way, it looks like another solid year for a team that came within a controversial loss to state champ Brick Memorial from wrestling for a Group IV Group title. Looking at the lightweights, Boyle was 21-14 and third at districts, Levondowski was 28-7 and fourth at regions, and Owen Boyle was 23-12. The middle is anchored by Vranken and Cancelliere. Vranken won 18 bouts, while Cancelliere was 25-9 and and fourth at regions. Delia (30-7) will be one of the top heavyweights around.

In order, the Vikings destroyed Ewing, 55-18, West Windsor North, 61-0, and host Princeton, 46-15.

Lucas Delpiano led the South Brunswick charge by decking three opponents in the first period at 215 pounds.

In other results from the quad, Ewing beat Princeton, 41-27, and West Windsor North, 49-21.

Matt Bearden (17-4) and Josh Gazio (20-1) continued to wrestle well for the Blue Devils with three wins on the day. Also winning three times was 119-pounder Hayden Robinson.

Host Notre Dame beat Nottingham, 46-30, but both teams lost to Lacey in a tri-meet.

South Brunswick beats Perth Amboy: Quintana returns, Vercammen impress

South Brunswick beats Perth Amboy: Quintana returns, Vercammen impresses and Cumber plans to wrestle at 160 pounds

STAFF WRITER

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A match that began with plenty of juice at 171 pounds, where the Greater Middlesex Conference’s top ranked wrestlers in that weight class squared off, quickly disintegrated into an unexpected runaway as fourth-ranked South Brunswick High School rolled to a 44-22 victory over third-ranked Perth Amboy in a battle of Home News Tribune Top 10 teams Wednesday night.

The Vikings spoiled the return of senior Heriberto Quintana, a third-place finisher in the state at 112 last winter who sat out the first three weeks of this season because of “”team issues,” according to Perth Amboy coach Mike Giordano.

Quintana, who is certified at 119 but wrestled at 125, won by technical fall (20-4, 5:32) over Frank Capraro, providing the Panthers with one of their few highlights. Quintana’s descent plan has him on pace to compete at 119 on Jan. 15.

Perth Amboy (2-3) started four freshmen and was without six starters including sophomore Luis Nunez, one of the conference’s top wrestlers at 112, who Giordano said was sitting for the second time this season because of “”team issues.”

“”(Coming in) we looked at their lineup, not from a shorthanded standpoint,” South Brunswick coach Joe Dougherty explained, “”and we (predicted) two toss up bouts with us splitting all the others. So when they came in and had a couple of kids not where they were

supposed to be we looked at it like, “Wow! It could be a lopsided score if our kids wrestle well,’ which they did.”

South Brunswick (4-1), whose lone loss is a three-point defeat at the hands of J.F. Kennedy, continues to look impressive.

The Vikings won nine bouts and owned a 17-7 edge in bonus points. The Panthers, known for staying off their backs, endured four pins.

With the score tied 9-9 after four bouts, South Brunswick won five of the next six to take a commanding 31-14 lead. Luke Rimmer’s technical fall at 145 mathematically sealed the victory with two bouts remaining, but the match was over long before his win.

The marquee battle at 171 between incumbent state qualifier Brendan Vercammen and rising star Matt Cumber lived up to its billing with Vercammen scoring a 3-1 decision. His ankle-pick for a takedown in the third period proved to be the difference. Cumber has looked impressive this year, especially in a 9-8 overtime loss to Long Branch’s Omar Akel, who placed fifth in the state last year.

“”We all knew the 171 bout was pivotal,” Dougherty said. “”The way that their lineup is (with two-time state qualifier Joel Perez at 215 and incumbent region qualifier Ryan Moskwa at heavyweight), where would it be best for me to see what moves I want to make? The last thing I wanted to see was 171 pulled first to set the tone of the match.”

Dougherty said most of the wrestlers on his team, with the exception of Vercammen, were surprised by Cumber’s toughness. Cumber plans to cut to 160 to help the team and remain there for the NJSIAA Individual Tournament.

“”We’ve been wrestling Cumber a number of years,” he said. “”He’s a very dangerous wrestler. He’s always impressed us but he impressed us tonight even more. You kind of get spoiled a little bit because you see Brendan wrestle all the time. We knew Cumber was good, but he got really good. Nothing for nothing, but it’s a true testament to Brendan, beating a quality kid. He wrestled smart. Cumber was good up top. Brendan knew how to stay away from that. He wrestled real intelligent.”

Jeff Goldhagen followed Vercammen’s decision with a pin. Dougherty gave undersized Lucas Delpiano an opportunity to forfeit to Perez, but the backup 189-pounder wanted to wrestle. Delpiano injured his ankle while getting pinned but epitomized South Brunswick’s heart.

Keith Lewis, who weighs 190 while competing at heavyweight, wrestled tough in a 5-2 loss to Moskwa that forged a 9-9 tie.

South Brunswick won the next three bouts before Quintana, whose mere presence in the gym energized the Perth Amboy crowd, stopped the bleeding. Quintana anxiously paced back and forth behind the Perth Amboy bench from the start of the match until it was his time to shine.

“”I couldn’t wait to wrestle,” Quintana said. “”I was finally back on the mat and it felt good. I was ready to go. It stunk not being with the team. I’m in pretty good shape. I did a lot of lifting and extra stuff on my own and was going to club.”

Giordano was not disappointed by the outcome for the simple reason that his squad was depleted.

“”When you are missing guys,” he said, “”there’s nothing you can do. Some of those kids haven’t wrestled a JV match, yet they wrestled varsity. When we get our team back, we’ll be OK.”
