FLEMINGTON — Although it will be difficult for a Mercer County wrestler to win a title at Region V, the same will definitely not be the case for the overall area when the tournament resumes tomorrow morning.
Originally scheduled to get going again tonight, Region V will now start again tomorrow at 10 o’clock because of the snow storm. The finals at the Hunterdon Central Fieldhouse should take place tomorrow evening around 6 o’clock.
Ranked fifth in the state, Hunterdon Central has three top seeds in Spencer Parcel (125), Brian Bistis (130) and Jerry Somma (160). Both Bistis and Somma are undefeated and will be difficult to stop on their home mat.
Although he’s only seeded second, Hunterdon Central’s Alex Shaffer is definitely the man to beat at 119 pounds as well. Shaffer is 27-0 and has looked tremendous to date.
Getting back to Mercer County, still alive following Tuesday’s pre-quarterfinals are Princeton’s Ian Snyder (103) and Damien Freeman (130), Ewing’s Josh Garzio (130), Hopewell Valley’s Travis Gerstacker (160), and Notre Dame’s Chris Silakoski (189) and MIke Silakoski (215).
The Silakoski twins had Tuesday night off after winning District 17 championships last week. Both have legitimate shots of advancing to Atlantic City.
Chris Silakoski is seeded third and will open against Bobby Burd of Voorhees, who he pinned last week. Winning this weight will be very difficult because of the presence of two-time state champion Andrew Compolattano of Bound Brook and Old Bridge’s tough Nick Orak.
Mike Silakoski, meanwhile, will open against Chris Raub of Sayreville. Raub does not have a winning record. Even better for the fourth-seeded Mike Silakoski, his weight does not have a huge hammer wrestler like his brother’s weight at 189 pounds.
As luck would have it, Freeman and Garzio will wrestle each other in tomorrow’s quarterfinal round. Garzio defeated Freeman in the Mercer County Tourney final and finished ahead of the Princeton wrestler last week, although they did not wrestle each other at districts.
Snyder had drawn the top seed at 103 pounds and Gerstacker will take on Hunter Pipala of Monroe.
In addition to Hunterdon Central, the rest of the Hunterdon County schools have wrestlers in gold-medal contention as well.
Delaware Valley has Cody Barbiche (31-4) at 103), Mike Pongracz (33-3 at 112) and Bobby Stevely (33-2 at 125). Stevely is looking to rebound following a narrow loss to Parcel last week. Pongracz is considered the favorite by many at his weight.
Also keep an eye on North Hunterdon’s undefeated heavyweight Jack Delia and Voorhees’ Mike Hafke (171). Hafke is in a weight with another top-seeded area wrestler in South Brunswick’s Brendon Vercammen.
