GMC Shines at Region 5

GMC Shines at Region 5

RARITAN TOWNSHIP — Just a few years ago, the Highland Park High School wrestling team was on life support, barely breathing with only four grapplers in the program.

The Owls, who never before qualified a single wrestler for the state tournament, advanced two to Atlantic City as senior D’Andre Bell and sophomore Tyler Rios stood out among Greater Middlesex Conference competitors in Saturday’s Region 5 Tournament at the Hunterdon Central Field House.

Eighteen GMC wrestlers advanced to the state tournament, which will be contested March 5-7 at Boardwalk Hall. The tournament will be seeded on Tuesday morning at NJSIAA headquarters in Robbinsville.

The top three finishers from each of the state’s eight regions move on to Atlantic City.

The GMC crowned five region champions and boasted 14 finalists. Three weight classes (135,140 and 215) featured all-GMC finals.

Monroe, Edison and Perth Amboy advanced a GMC-best three wrestlers apiece to the states, while Old Bridge and Bishop Ahr each advanced two.

“”You could see all the individual talent we have throughout the GMC and we showcased it here at Region 5,’’ Old Bridge coach Bryan Garnett said. “We are going to be well-represented in Atlantic City and that’s what it’s all about.’’

Conor Hayes became the winningest wrestler in Old Bridge history, earning career victory 117 with an 11-1 major decision over Piscataway’s David Powell in the 140-pound final.

He broke a 28-year-old record previously held by Kevin Jacoutot, a four-time state finalist who compiled a 114-4 mark, with wins in the region quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

“”It’s nice,’’ Hayes said of the school record, “”but I wasn’t really looking for it. It was like a milestone. I always looked at (the 100-win banner in the wrestling room) every day. I wanted to be up there.’’

The region title was the second for Hayes, who won the 103-pound title as a sophomore.

Edison’s Ray DeLaNuez (125) and Monroe’s Sam Emburgia (135) each won a second straight region title.

Sayreville’s Gary Siriday (103) and Monroe’s Marc Tyson (215) each won their first region titles.

Monroe was the only GMC school to crown two region champions. Tyson earned a hard-fought 5-4 decision over two-time state qualifier Joel Perez of Perth Amboy’s, while Emburgia pinned Bishop Ahr’s Derek Delacruz in 1:18.

“”I felt like overall we wrestled well toward the end of the year,’’ Monroe coach Bill Jacoutot said. “”To have two individual champions was a nice way to wrap (the regions) up. Now we turn our focus to Atlantic City.’’

Piscataway’s David Powell (140), Bishop Ahr’s Taylor Black (145), Monroe’s David Saley, South Brunswick’s Brendan Vercammen (171) and Old Bridge’s Nick Orak (189) were region runners-up.

In the region’s marquee final, Hunterdon Central’s Alex Shaffer posted a 2:38 pin at 119 pounds of Perth Amboy’s Heriberto Quintana, a third-place finisher in Atlantic City last year. The bout was a rematch of last year’s 112-pound region final, which Shaffer won 8-6 before failing to medal in the state tournament.

Shaffer was named the region’s Outstanding Wrestler, while his mentor, Steve Gibble, was named Region 5 Coach of the Year.

Bell advanced as the top seed to the 130-pound final, where he lost to undefeated Brian Bistis (35-0) of Hunterdon Central, who placed eighth in the state last year.

Rios opened the day with a quarterfinal loss to Bound Brook juggernaut Andrew Campolattano, a two-time state champion with a 126-1 career record. Rios won three wrestleback matches to finish third.

“”It hasn’t sunk in yet,’’ Highland Park head coach Craig Girvan said of qualifying two Owls for the state tournament.

“”Highland Park is such a fine academic institution and we’ve been known a long time for football. When I got there in 2000 with (former assistant Scott) Gerba, our first year wrestling we finished 0-18 and we only had four kids in the program.

“”We’ve been fighting since then and we put in a lot of time. It’s just phenomenal.’’

Black, the Cinderella of Region 5, advanced as the No. 7 seed to the 140-pound final, where he lost to unbeaten Micah Blair (35-0) of Somerville, a three-time district champion.

“”Taylor has worked hard all year so I’m not surprised,’’ Bishop Ahr coach Nick Tonzola said of Black reaching the final.

“Every one of his losses is to a quality opponent. He’s wrestled a tough schedule and tough competition all year, battling with (teammates) Derek (Delacruz) and Mike (Pysniak) on a daily basis.’’

Vercammen fell short in his bid for a second straight region crown, dropping a 10-0 major decision to Mike Havke of Voorhees.

“”With his experience from last year Brendan found out he can compete at this level and belong,’’ South Brunswick coach Joe Dougherty said. “”Mentally he’s stronger and physically he’s grown into the 171-pound class.’’

“”I think the state tournament last year (where Vercammen failed to medal) left a sour taste in his mouth because he felt he could have placed higher and he didn’t.

“”So he spent a lot of time in the offseason working for this moment. This is the second season. He’s ready for it. He wrestled real smart and we’re going back to Atlantic City with the hope of bringing home some hardware.’’

The GMC went 4-4 in third-place bouts with victories from Edison’s Anthony Peterson (119), Edison’s Devon Coates (140), Perth Amboy’s Ryan Moskwa (285) and Rios (189).

Peterson defeated Sayreville’s Anthony Geiger and Coates beat Sayreville’s Noel Santiago to advance.

This Week in Middlesex County Wrestling (High school Wrestling news)

By THE STAR-LEDGER / Wrestling News
February 16, 2010, 2:35PM
WRESTLER TO WATCH Senior Ryan Sacco made his stamp on South Plainfield wrestling history on Sunday when he secured a state title for his squad, ranked No. 4 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, against No. 1 High Point at the NJSIAA/Star-Ledger Group 3 final in Toms River. Sacco outlasted a Region 1 champion, Joey Gaccione, 6-5, in four overtimes to seal South Plainfield's first state title since 2007. The victory sent his team and the fans into a frenzy and reopened the debate over the state's top team. The 145-pound senior will have plenty momentum as he looks to earn his third-straight District 12 crown and extend South Plainfield's state-record streak of 25 consecutive district titles in South Plainfield this weekend. TEAM TO WATCH Edison, last season's District 19 runner-up, will need to sneak by the 2009 champions, Piscataway, and this year's Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament silver medalist, Perth Amboy, to earn a district crown in Woodbridge. Edison returns just one of its three district gold medalists, Ray De La Nuez (125 pounds), and will need to improve on its eighth-place finish in the GMCT on Jan. 30. The squad will get help from Anthony Peterson (119), a GMCT runner-up this season, as well as Devon Coates (140) and Sean Lightner (215), who placed fourth in the GMCT. MATCH TO WATCH Old Bridge will fight for its third District 20 title in four years when competition begins in South Brunswick. Old Bridge returns two defending champions in Steve Zafrani (171) and heavyweight Justin Harrison, and will try to hold off Sayreville, which finished second to Old Bridge in 2009, and Monroe. Sayreville is led by returning gold medalists Gary Siriday (103), Anthony Geiger (119) and Noel Santiago (140). Sam Emburgia (135), David Saley (152) and Marc Tyson (215) of Monroe and Brendan Vercammen of South Brunswick (171) will also look to repeat as champions. -Mike Berg http://www.nj.com/hssports/news/wrestling/index.ssf/2010/02/this_week_in_middlesex_county_5.html

District 20 Wrestling - Vercammen repeats as 171 pound champ,

District 20 Wrestling - Vercammen repeats as 171 pound champ,
Zebras' McMillan wears
heavyweight crown

By DAN STRAFFORD • CORRESPONDENT •
February 20, 2010

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — It's tough to call any athlete
as strong and quick as New Brunswick High
School's heavyweight Nadrell McMillan an
underdog, but he was just that coming into the
District 20 tournament at South Brunswick High
School.

McMillan was slotted in the fifth seed in a bracket
that featured favorites Justin Harrison of Old Bridge
and Tyler Carlock of Sayreville. He never batted an
eye at the competition, he just went right through
them.

McMillan beat South Brunswick's Keith Lewis in the
quarterfinals, Harrison in the semifinals, and took
down Carlock, 6-3, to win the title Saturday.

"My coaches have been telling me about all them,"
McMillan said. "How big the one seed is, the four
seed, how strong he is, so they prepared me for all
of them."

A district champ for a school that didn't have a
program five years ago is a big step forward. Jason
McLean has not only been the head coach, but the
team's fundraiser, administrative assistant, and
lobbyist, but most of all he's been a leader.

"Last year was our first time having a kid here on the
second day," he said. "Now, to be here and not be in
last place and be in front of a bunch of teams, it
makes all that stuff that we went through as a team
well worth while."

Two years of practice and hard work paid off for
McMillan.

"It was a lot of Saturdays, a lot of running from one
end of New Brunswick to the other end," McMillan
said.

"I think Nadrell will be an example to kids in New
Brunswick that you can be a champ, or at least a
better person," McLean said.

A region championship would go along way to do
that as well and McLean said he thinks anything is
possible.

"That's what I'm hoping for, I have to look at that,"
McLean said. "A regional champ would be beautiful, t
op three would be beautiful, and I think he can do
it."

The team title once again came down to Old Bridge
and Sayreville, with the Knights leading, 172-166,
heading into the finals. And once again, the title was
in doubt until the final bout of the day.

The Bombers trailed Old Bridge by six points
heading into the 135 pound championship, but
Monroe's Sam Emburgia pinned Sayreville's Kyle
Anderson to secure the win for Old Bridge.
Emburgia was named the tournament's Outstanding
Wrestler. The Knights finished with 184 points, six
ahead of Sayreville's 178. Monroe (149.5), South
Brunswick (148), and East Brunswick (123.5)
rounded out the top five.

The Falcons picked up the most individual titles on
the day. Along with Embrugia, they also had Hunter
Pipala (160), Marc Tyson (215), Kyle Jensen (125)
and David Saley (152) picked up titles.

Old Bridge had three district champs with Nick
Orack (189), Conor Hayes (140), and Jamie Bond
(145).

Sayreville and South Brunswick had two champs
apiece. The Bombers picked up wins with Gary
Siriday (103) and Anthony Geiger (119). The Vikings
won with James Pagano (130) and Brandan
Vercammen (171).

Michael Palomba (112) was the lone wrestler from
South River to one a championship.

The Region V tournament kicks off 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Hunderdon Central High School.

DISTRICT 20

at South Brunswick

Champions again: Monroe's David Saley (152) collected his fourth title to add to his crowns at 130, 135 and 145 pounds while teammate Sam Emburgia (135) earned his third consecutive title after winning at 119 in 2008 and 125 in 2009. Emburgia's teammate Marc Tyson (215) repeated as a champion after taking the title at 189 last winter. Sayreville's Gary Siriday repeated at 103 before teammate Anthony Geiger earned gold at 119 to add to his championship at 112 from 2009. South Brunswick's Brendan Vercammen repeated at 171. Conor Hayes (140), who took gold at 103 in 2008 but fell to Emburgia in the final at 125 last winter, collected his second career gold medal.

Outstanding Wrestler: Emburgia pinned his way through the tournament and concluded his run with a fall over Sayreville's Kyle Anderson in 1:17 in the final. Emburgia will graduate with three district championships and one silver medal, which he earned in a 9-4 loss in the title match to Conor Hayes of Old Bridge as a freshman.

Back Points: Fifth-seeded Nadrell McMillan of New Brunswick knocked off the defending heavyweight champion, Jerome Harrison of Old Bridge, and second-seeded Tyler Carlock of Sayreville to earn his first title. Nick Orak scored his first title after finishing second last season and Jamie Bond earned gold to propel Old Bridge to its third team title in four years. Hunter Pipala (160) and Kyle Jensen (125) combined with Saley, Emburgia and Tyson to give Monroe a tournament-high five winners.
