HS WRESTLING: Hunterdon Central wins five, but rest of Mercer flounders

FLEMINGTON — Although Hunterdon County wrestlers managed to win five individual titles at the Region V Tournament last night, it was not a good day for the Mercer County half rest of District 17.

In fact, it was one of the worst showings ever as only Ewing’s Josh Gazio (125) was able to advance to Atlantic City.

Champions from Hunterdon County were Hunterdon Central's Alex Shaffer (119), Brian Bistis (130), and Jerry Somma (160), Voorhees’ Mike Hakfe (171) and North Hunterdon heavyweight Jack Delia.

Shaffer was named the Outstanding Wrestler after pinning in the first first minute of his final.

After beating Princeton’s Damian Freeman, 5-2, in the quarterfinals, Garzio once again lost to Hunterdon Central’s district champion Brian Bistis, this time by a score of 12-4.
Both Garzio and Freeman then wrestled back to the consolation final, where Garzio beat Freehman for the third time this year. It was the closest bout to date, but the Garzio prevailed, 5-4, to run his record 35-3. Garzio is only a junior and on course to smash Ewing’s school record for wins next year.

In addition to Freeman, coming up one win short were Hopewell Valley’s Travis Gerstacker (160) and Notre Dame’s Mike Silakowski (215).

Silakoski came about as close as you can, but with the score tied at 6-all late in the third period, he was taken down with a single leg by Hunterdon Central’s Shane Fenton and pinned with :09 to go.

After losing to Hunterdon Central’s Jerry Somma for the third time this year in the semifinals, Gerstacker bounced back with two straight wins before seeing his season end in an 8-2 loss to John McArdle of Franklin.
