HS WRESTLING: State pairings a mixed bag for locals

The pairings were released yesterday for this weekend’s New Jersey State Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City. As always, it was good news for some locals and not so good for others.

Coming off his second straight region title, Robbinsville heayweight Brandon DiDonato is in the other half of the bracket from Manchester’s two-time state champion Jimmy Lawson. Should he win his opener, DiDonato will probably face Lower Cape May’s undefeated Chaz Lear, who isn’t tall, but is tough on top with legs and a power half.

Mercer’s other region champion, Trenton 171-pounder Canaan Bethea will open against Voorhees’ Mike Hafke. This is a rematch from earlier in the year when Bethea stormed back to defeat Hafke by the score of 8-7.

Eight other Mercer wrestlers will also be in Atlantic City.

Hamilton’s first wrestler to advance to states since Eric Ammirata in 2003, freshman Jared Staub will open against Jan Rosenberg of Morris Knolls at 103 pounds. Also in this weight is Robbinsville’s David Bossie, who will face Nick Wabba of Somerville.

Other Robbinsville wrestlers at states are 112-pounder Brian O’Toole and 119-pounder Jared Icenhower.

The lone Mercer representative out of Region V, Ewing 130-pounder Josh Garzio, has drawn Dymere Rappa of Paulsboro.

Trenton sophomore Ray Bethea (29-1), meanwhile, will open against a tough customer in Kittattiny’s Chris Burdge at 145 pounds.

Gregg “The Hebrew Hammer’’ Ratner of Hightstown is also in the 171-pound weight class along with Canaan Bethea. Ratner will take on South Brunswick’s Region V runner-up Brandon Vercammen of South Brunswick.

Also representing Mercer County is Allentown’s Ross Scheuerman at 160 pounds. He will face Dane McDermott of St. Joe’s Montvale.

In addition to DiDonato, other area wrestlers who received the top seeds in their half of the brackets are Burlington Township’s Kevin Devoy (112) and Willingboro’s Tyler Scotton (130).
