SOUTH PLAINFIELD — Leonard Robbins-Lockhart
did everything in his power to lift the East Brunswick
High School boys to the title at Saturday's Greater
Middlesex Conference Track & Field Championships.
Despite his Herculean effort — which included a
county record in the 100-meter dash and three
other victories — perennial power Old Bridge
prevailed by one-half point at Frank Jost Field.
"I wanted to do well for myself and my team so we
could score some points," the junior said. "I think I
made a big statement, basically putting East
Brunswick's name out there."
Robbins-Lockhart's legs did most of the talking. It
started with a superlative performance in the 100
dash. His time of 10.72 routed the field — South
Brunswick speedster Brian Oni took second in 10.91
— and eclipsed the Middlesex County record of
10.73 set by John F. Kennedy great Courtney Burton
in 1990, two years before Robbins-Lockhart was
born.
"My start was good and I ran hard all the way," he
said. "I was surprised with the time. Once my
teammate told me my time I was like, "Oh my gosh.' "
He kept rolling through wins the 200 (21.64) and
long jump (21-10.5) and capped off the brilliant day
with a 49.6 anchor on the 4x400, teaming with
Kevin Mulcahey (52.1), Evan Walton (50.4) and Don
Urschel (51.6) for a 3:24.27 triumph.
Then the wait began. Problems with the statistician,
Tumey Timing & Data of Delaware, caused a 75-
minute delay before the final team scores were
announced. When the smoke cleared, East
Brunswick's star power, which included a win in the
400 by Walton (50.70) and the discus by
sophomore Sam Mattis (184-9) was not enough to
take down balanced Old Bridge.
The Knights struck gold in just two events — senior
Dan D'Amato took the shot put (54-5) and junior
Andre Davis the javelin (178-6) — but stockpiled 89
points to East Brunswick's 88.5.
Davis was the glue guy. He placed third in the
discus (145-10) and sixth in the shot put (47-1),
and he was third in the 110 hurdles final until he
clipped the ninth hurdle and fell.
"It was tiring now that it actually hit me, but when
I'm moving I don't stop until I'm finished," Davis
said of his busy day.
Old Bridge last won this meet in 2008.
"There are certain things we could have done a little
bit better, but overall for the most part it was what I
expected," Knights coach Jack Campbell said. "
Obviously Andre falling took a few points away but
other than that I think we got the most out of what
we had."
Individually, two athletes won two events Saturday.
The first was J.P. Stevens senior Alan Broussard,
who routed the fields in both hurdle races. In the
morning rain, Broussard broke the tape in the 400
hurdles gold with a brisk time of 54.72. Then he
came back for a 14.23 triumph in the 110 hurdles —
half a second ahead of runner-up Christian Boeteng
of Old Bridge.
"It's a great feeling, it feels like I'm on top of the
world, but I know I still have to keep working and

still improve," Broussard said. "I want to set a great
example for future runners at J.P. Stevens."
The second double-winner was Bishop Ahr
sophomore Tim Ball. After a runner-up showing in
the GMC cross country meet, Ball earned his first
conference title with a 9:36.04 effort in the 3200.
Then he doubled back for a wild win in the 1600,
trading the lead with Old Bridge's Moheb Thomas
three times in the final 500 meters before finishing
ahead, 4:25.19 to 4:25.65.
"The goal today was to double up and win the mile
and two mile," Ball said. "I never ran the two-mile c
ompetitively, but I think I did pretty good in it. It
was long, but my coaches and teammates pulled me
through by cheering me on. In the 1600, I thought I
was going to lose after (Thomas) passed me but I
had something left. It was a great race."
One prime athlete was noticeably absent in Dunellen
senior Jonard Hall, who was the premeet favorite in
the 400 and long jump but had bronchitis. The
Destroyers still came away with some hardware as
fellow senior standout Rontik Sadler won the high
jump (6-4) and took second in the 200 (21.81), but
they were not able to load up a 4x400 in defense of
their surprising GMC Relays win.

The way this meet was run, and in particular the work of the automatic timer, was a disgrace. Results were being announced two hours after the event ended. The 4×400 ended shortly after 3 p.m., and it was 4:20 when the scores were tallied and Old Bridge was finally awarded its team title.
Jim Lambert and I nearly had to fight the timer from Tumey Timing & Data as he packed up to leave for Delaware without divulging the results from nine field events or the team scores. Note to everybody: Do yourself and your athletes a favor and avoid hiring this timer in the future.
Worst of all, meet director Bob Zifchak was standing right there when our argument began and he just took off in the middle of it, never to return. Way to abdicate responsibility.
I cover meets in Somerset County, Hunterdon County, Union County, state meets, invitational meets, and they all run like Swiss clocks compared to the perennial debacles in Middlesex County.
Despite the failings of the people in charge, this meet featured very good performances from the athletes. Two things I’ve never seen before happened – a championship meet decided by half a point (East Brunswick tied for sixth in the high jump) and a team score 149 points in a competition with this many schools (South Brunswick’s girls, take a bow).

STARS OF THE MEET
Leonard Robbins-Lockhart, East Brunswick: The junior broke Courtney Burton’s 20-year-old county record in the 100 with a 10.72 and also won the 200 (21.64) long jump (21-10) and anchored the winning 4×400 (49.7 split).
Laura Williams, North Brunswick: The senior broke a six-year-old meet record in the 400 hurdles (1:01.51), won the 400 (56.68), took third in the triple jump (34-8) and anchored the 4×400 to second place with a 55.3 split.
Honorable mention: South Brunswick’s Sophia Ginez and Mariah Browne, Bishop Ahr’s Tim Ball, J.P. Stevens’ Alan Broussard, Bishop Ahr’s Jordan Simmons and East Brunswick’s Corinne Kominkiewicz were all double-winners.
SURPRISES OF THE MEET
Evan Walton, East Brunswick: Won a very strange boys 400 in which three of the county’s four sub-49 runners passed the race up and the fourth, Dunellen’s Jonard Hall, was out with bronchitis.
Kayla Lubonski, Edison: The feshman won the girls 800 in 2:21. The county’s top girls half-miler, Old Bridge’s Chelsea Lodato, missed the meet due to illness.
MOST UNDERRATED ATHLETES
Brooke Astor, Spotswood: Astor won the high jump (5-2), took fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:03.33) and fifth in the javelin (96-8). How’s that for versatility?
Derek Forthun, South Brunswick: Forthun won the triple jump (44-3.5), took third in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the pole vault (11-6).
EVENTS OF THE MEET
Girls 100 hurdles: Great showdown between New Brunswick’s Briana Barlow (14.40) and South Brunwick’s Jamie Thompson (14.47). They’ll probably meet again in the MOC final.
Girls 400 hurdles: Four athletes under 1:03.5 — that’s quality.

This time last year, nobody in New Jersey knew anything about Leonard Robbins-Lockhart, now at junior at East Brunswick. Laura Williams of North Brunswick wasn’t exactly a household name, either.
But after what they did yesterday, everyone will certainly know their names now as Robbins-Lockhart and Williams lit up the track with sensational record-setting performances at the Greater Middlesex Conference Championships held at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.
Robbins-Lockhart, who lived in Georgia last year, blazed a 10.72 100-meter dash, good for a meet and Middlesex County record; won the 200 in 21.64, captured the long jump with a 20-10½ and split 49.5 on the winning 4x400 relay.
Led by Robbins-Lockhart’s four gold medals, East Brunswick nearly won its first GMC boys title since 1987, falling a half-point short to Old Bridge, 89-88½. Old Bridge, led by winners Andre Davis (javelin) and Dan D’Amato (shot put), has now won eight of the last nine titles and 11 overall.
Robbins-Lockhart broke the county 100 record of 10.73 set in 1990 by Courtney Burton of Iselin Kennedy. Burton won the 100 and 200 at the M of C in 1989 and ‘90.
``It’s nice to come out here and make a statement,’’ Robbins-Lockhart said. ``I got a great start in the 100 and that was the key in that race. When I saw the time, I was like `Oh wow.' And to get the county record is great. I had no idea what it was, but I think I can keep getting faster.''
Robbins-Lockhart was just as proud of what his team accomplished.
``There are a lot of people that don’t really mention us, so it’s nice to put our names out there like this,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Williams, a senior at North Brunswick, smashed the meet record in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.51, the eighth-fastest time in the nation this season, took first in the 400 in a personal best 56.68, placed third in the triple jump with a 34-8½, and ran a sizzling 55.3 on the runner-up 4x400 team. Last year, Williams was second in the 100 and third in the 200.
``Nobody really knew me last year because I ran the 100 and 200 and wasn’t this fast,’’ said the Monmouth-bound Williams, who broke the meet record in the 400 hurdles of 1:02.35 set in 2004 by Tremaine Shaw of Piscataway. ``But now people know my name. It feels good.’’
Williams didn’t start running the 400 until this year.
``It wasn’t my choice,’’ she said. ``My coaches felt I could be good at it. It’s worked out way better than I ever thought.’’
Behind Williams, North Brunswick finished second to South Brunswick, 142-68. South Brunswick, led by double winners Sophia Ginez and Mariah Browne, has won five GMC titles in a row and seven overall. Ginez won the 1,600 in 5:22.07 and the 3,200 in 11:40.69. Browne took first in the long jump (17-11) and triple jump (37-5½).
``We try not to think about what the newspaper predicts about who is going to win because we know that teams are gunning for us and we still have to come out and perform well,’’ Ginez said. ``We wanted to run well and get ourselves ready for the sectionals and groups in a couple weeks.

Ginez has now won both the 1,600 and 3,200 four straight years.
``It’s nice to be consistent in those events and prove that I can win them year after year,’’ Ginez said.
There were several double winners on the day. In the boys competition, Alan Broussard of J.P. Stevens swept the hurdles, winning the 400 hurdles in 54.72 and the 110 hurdles in 14.23, both personal bests.
Tim Ball of Bishop Ahr continued his breakout sophomore year by doubling in the distances, capturing the 3,200 in 9:36.04. Ball came back later and mounted a big comeback over the last 50 meters to win the 1,600 in 4:25.19.
On the girls' side, Corinne Kominkiewicz of East Brunswick won the shot (41-4½) and discus (127-5). Senior Jordan Simmons of Bishop Ahr, who missed most of last spring with a partially torn hamstring, won the 100 (11.93) and 200 (24.95). Simmons won the 100 and 200 as a sophomore.
Senior Briana Barlow of New Brunswick won the 100 hurdles in 14.40 to capture the 10th county title of her career.

This time last year, nobody in New Jersey knew anything about Leonard Robbins-Lockhart, now at junior at East Brunswick. Laura Williams of North Brunswick wasn’t exactly a household name, either.
But after what they did yesterday, everyone will certainly know their names now as Robbins-Lockhart and Williams lit up the track with sensational record-setting performances at the Greater Middlesex Conference Championships held at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.
Robbins-Lockhart, who lived in Georgia last year, blazed a 10.72 100-meter dash, good for a meet and Middlesex County record; won the 200 in 21.64, captured the long jump with a 20-10½ and split 49.5 on the winning 4x400 relay.
Led by Robbins-Lockhart’s four gold medals, East Brunswick nearly won its first GMC boys title since 1987, falling a half-point short to Old Bridge, 89-88½. Old Bridge, led by winners Andre Davis (javelin) and Dan D’Amato (shot put), has now won eight of the last nine titles and 11 overall.
Robbins-Lockhart broke the county 100 record of 10.73 set in 1990 by Courtney Burton of Iselin Kennedy. Burton won the 100 and 200 at the M of C in 1989 and ‘90.
``It’s nice to come out here and make a statement,’’ Robbins-Lockhart said. ``I got a great start in the 100 and that was the key in that race. When I saw the time, I was like `Oh wow.' And to get the county record is great. I had no idea what it was, but I think I can keep getting faster.''
Robbins-Lockhart was just as proud of what his team accomplished.
``There are a lot of people that don’t really mention us, so it’s nice to put our names out there like this,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, Williams, a senior at North Brunswick, smashed the meet record in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.51, the eighth-fastest time in the nation this season, took first in the 400 in a personal best 56.68, placed third in the triple jump with a 34-8½, and ran a sizzling 55.3 on the runner-up 4x400 team. Last year, Williams was second in the 100 and third in the 200.
``Nobody really knew me last year because I ran the 100 and 200 and wasn’t this fast,’’ said the Monmouth-bound Williams, who broke the meet record in the 400 hurdles of 1:02.35 set in 2004 by Tremaine Shaw of Piscataway. ``But now people know my name. It feels good.’’
Williams didn’t start running the 400 until this year.
``It wasn’t my choice,’’ she said. ``My coaches felt I could be good at it. It’s worked out way better than I ever thought.’’
Behind Williams, North Brunswick finished second to South Brunswick, 142-68. South Brunswick, led by double winners Sophia Ginez and Mariah Browne, has won five GMC titles in a row and seven overall. Ginez won the 1,600 in 5:22.07 and the 3,200 in 11:40.69. Browne took first in the long jump (17-11) and triple jump (37-5½).
``We try not to think about what the newspaper predicts about who is going to win because we know that teams are gunning for us and we still have to come out and perform well,’’ Ginez said. ``We wanted to run well and get ourselves ready for the sectionals and groups in a couple weeks.

Ginez has now won both the 1,600 and 3,200 four straight years.
``It’s nice to be consistent in those events and prove that I can win them year after year,’’ Ginez said.
There were several double winners on the day. In the boys competition, Alan Broussard of J.P. Stevens swept the hurdles, winning the 400 hurdles in 54.72 and the 110 hurdles in 14.23, both personal bests.
Tim Ball of Bishop Ahr continued his breakout sophomore year by doubling in the distances, capturing the 3,200 in 9:36.04. Ball came back later and mounted a big comeback over the last 50 meters to win the 1,600 in 4:25.19.
On the girls' side, Corinne Kominkiewicz of East Brunswick won the shot (41-4½) and discus (127-5). Senior Jordan Simmons of Bishop Ahr, who missed most of last spring with a partially torn hamstring, won the 100 (11.93) and 200 (24.95). Simmons won the 100 and 200 as a sophomore.
Senior Briana Barlow of New Brunswick won the 100 hurdles in 14.40 to capture the 10th county title of her career.
South Brunswick, led by senior Brendan Vercammen, picked up a gold in the javelin with a total of 433-6.

The East Brunswick boys felt it had a little something to prove when it took the track during yesterday’s first day of action at the Greater Middlesex Conference Relays in brisk and windy conditions at South Brunswick in Monmouth Junction.
And they did exactly what it wanted to do as junior Julian Quintin (23.7), junior Evan Walton (22.2), sophomore Donald Urschel (22.2) and junior Leonard Robbins (21.1) won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:30.2, tying a school record set in 1986.
``There are people in the state that are underestimating us,’’ said Walton. ``We want to show that East Brunswick is one of the best teams in the state in the sprints.’’
East Brunswick will be trying to take down a couple more school records today in the 4x100 (43.12) and the 4x400 (3:21.6).
The South Brunswick boys, bidding to end Old Bridge’s streak of four straight titles, grabbed the first day lead with 38 points behind a balanced attack. South Brunswick, seeking its first title since 2005, is four points ahead of East Brunswick. Old Bridge is third with 32.
Freshman Jalel Alston scored on three teams for South Brunswick. He went a personal best 20-3 on the third-place long jump team, cleared ?? on the pole vault that tied for second, and ran a leg on the sixth-place 4x200.

Old Bridge also won the 4x1,600 in 18:46.5 as Mo Thomas (4:33), Shawn Burke (4:41), Corey O’Neill (4:42) and Anthony Branco (4:48) teamed up for the win.
Jonard Hall and Rontik Sadler had big days for Dunellen.
Hall, a senior, leaped a personal best and meet best 22-03 ¾ to help his team with that event, and split 22.0 on the fifth-place 4x200. Sadler, a junior, split a sizzling 21.5 as the anchor on the 4x200 and was also on the long jump.
All-State football player Nate Smith of Highland Park, who rushed for with 2,445 yards last fall, had the top javelin throw of the meet of 161-8. Smith is headed to Temple to play football.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — It's easy to forget that there's
a "field" in track and field, but the South Brunswick
High School boys reminded the rest of the Greater
Middlesex Conference on Wednesday.
The Vikings dominated the throws and jumps to
upset perennial favorite Old Bridge in the GMC
Relays. Victories in the triple jump, high jump,
discus and javelin buoyed the Vikings to 102 points
and their first county relays crown since 2005. Old
Bridge, which had won this meet four years running,
finished with 97 1/2 points after a strong showing
on the track.
"I know we're a deep team, and obviously beating
Old Bridge is the benchmark," South Brunswick
coach Wilfredo Rivera said. "It's nice, especially
because I always look at relay meets like it's the
complete team."

Brunswick's discus and shot put trios followed suit,
placing first in the former (401-5) and second in the
latter (135-7) on Wednesday.
"The javelin was huge," said junior Dominic
Padovano, who posted marks of 152 feet in the
discus and 48 feet in the shot. "The three guys who
throw discus and shot, we watched the javelin and
that kind of pushed us. We knew we had to perform
well."
All told, South Brunswick scored 28 of a possible 30
points in the throws.
"I think we stepped up to the challenge," Padovano
said. "We didn't let the team down."
Neither did the jumpers. Junior Derek Forthun led
the Vikings to victories in the high jump and triple
jump on Wednesday. They also took third in the
long jump and tied for second in the pole vault on
Tuesday. More points.
"Coming into it people didn't think we were going to
win. I thought we were going to win," Forthun said.
"It's great. I just really wanted to beat Old Bridge
because they're always beating us."
Over the past four years, South Brunswick had taken
second three times and third once in this meet.
"We're a consistent program. We just hadn't gotten
over that hump," said Rivera, a former Old Bridge
standout who remains friendly with his old coaches.
"It's nice to get over it and let these kids know that
four years of hard work, you get something for it."
Old Bridge didn't exactly leave empty-handed. The
Knights swept the hurdles, including a brisk 1
minute, 1.3 seconds in the shuttles, and the
distance events. A 4:31 anchor mile by Corey O'Neil
secured a distance medley win in 10:42. Anthony
Branco's 1:59 anchor 800 brought home the
Knights' winning sprint medley in 3:39.
East Brunswick flexed its muscles in the sprints,
taking the 4x100 (43.7) and 4x200 (1:30).
Perhaps the most stirring event of the day was the
4x400. Dunellen broke the tape with a blazing time
of 3:23.3, holding off Old Bridge and East Brunswick
down the homestretch. Senior Jonard Hall (49.0
split), senior Luke Francisco (52.9), junior Kerry
Hansen (52.3) and junior Rontik Sadler (48.9) led
wire to wire, earning Dunellen's second gold medal
of the meet.
On Tuesday, thanks largely to Hall's 22-foot leap,
the Destroyers also won the long jump.
"We wanted to be in the fast heat because we knew
our guys hadn't been able to put it all together yet,"
head coach J.R. Lubisco said. "They've been training
their butts off waiting for the chance to run this
4x400. They went for it and it was unbelievable."
They obliterated the old school record of 3:30. The
anchor leg was particularly exciting as Sadler bolted
from East Brunswick's Leonard Robbins (48.9) and
Old Bridge's Christian Boeteng (49.8) after all three
rounded the final turn together.
"My whole idea was to cruise until the last 150,"
Sadler said. "Jonard started us off with a great lead,
Luke kept it up, Kerry finally got his time down,
which I'm loving right now, and they got me the lead
and left the race in my hands, so all I could do was
finish it off."
If folks didn't know it before, the message was loud
and clear: Dunellen is legit.
"We surprised a lot of guys because Dunellen,
nobody really knew about us," Sadler said. "We're a
square-mile town, we've got 78 in our graduating
class. A lot of people don't pay attention to us
because we're so small. Little do they know, for a
small team we've got a pretty dynamite squad."

going the ball rolling on Tuesday, winning the
javelin with a combined distance of 433 feet, 6 i
nches during Day 1 of the competition.South
Brunswick's discus and shot put trios followed suit,
placing first in the former (401-5) and second in the
latter (135-7) on Wednesday.
"The javelin was huge," said junior Dominic
Padovano, who posted marks of 152 feet in the
discus and 48 feet in the shot. "The three guys who
throw discus and shot, we watched the javelin and
that kind of pushed us. We knew we had to perform
well."
All told, South Brunswick scored 28 of a possible 30
points in the throws.
"I think we stepped up to the challenge," Padovano
said. "We didn't let the team down."
Neither did the jumpers. Junior Derek Forthun led
the Vikings to victories in the high jump and triple
jump on Wednesday. They also took third in the
long jump and tied for second in the pole vault on
Tuesday. More points.
"Coming into it people didn't think we were going to
win. I thought we were going to win," Forthun said.
"It's great. I just really wanted to beat Old Bridge
because they're always beating us."
Over the past four years, South Brunswick had taken
second three times and third once in this meet.
"We're a consistent program. We just hadn't gotten
over that hump," said Rivera, a former Old Bridge
standout who remains friendly with his old coaches.
"It's nice to get over it and let these kids know that
four years of hard work, you get something for it."
Old Bridge didn't exactly leave empty-handed. The
Knights swept the hurdles, including a brisk 1
minute, 1.3 seconds in the shuttles, and the
distance events. A 4:31 anchor mile by Corey O'Neil
secured a distance medley win in 10:42. Anthony
Branco's 1:59 anchor 800 brought home the
Knights' winning sprint medley in 3:39.
East Brunswick flexed its muscles in the sprints,
taking the 4x100 (43.7) and 4x200 (1:30).
Perhaps the most stirring event of the day was the
4x400. Dunellen broke the tape with a blazing time
of 3:23.3, holding off Old Bridge and East Brunswick
down the homestretch. Senior Jonard Hall (49.0
split), senior Luke Francisco (52.9), junior Kerry
Hansen (52.3) and junior Rontik Sadler (48.9) led
wire to wire, earning Dunellen's second gold medal
of the meet.
On Tuesday, thanks largely to Hall's 22-foot leap,
the Destroyers also won the long jump.
"We wanted to be in the fast heat because we knew
our guys hadn't been able to put it all together yet,"
head coach J.R. Lubisco said. "They've been training
their butts off waiting for the chance to run this
4x400. They went for it and it was unbelievable."
They obliterated the old school record of 3:30. The
anchor leg was particularly exciting as Sadler bolted
from East Brunswick's Leonard Robbins (48.9) and
Old Bridge's Christian Boeteng (49.8) after all three
rounded the final turn together.
"My whole idea was to cruise until the last 150,"
Sadler said. "Jonard started us off with a great lead,
Luke kept it up, Kerry finally got his time down,
which I'm loving right now, and they got me the lead
and left the race in my hands, so all I could do was
finish it off."
If folks didn't know it before, the message was loud
and clear: Dunellen is legit.
"We surprised a lot of guys because Dunellen,
nobody really knew about us," Sadler said. "We're a
square-mile town, we've got 78 in our graduating
class. A lot of people don't pay attention to us
because we're so small. Little do they know, for a
small team we've got a pretty dynamite squad."

ANTHONY ASHNAULT
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Freshman
Highlights: The rookie sensation became the Greater
Middlesex Conference's first state champion since
2005 when former South Plainfield star Jimmy
Conroy won the 103-pound title. Ashnault rolled to
the 103 state title with a 44-0 record. He defeated
Colts Neck junior Tyler Fraley 6-5 in the state final,
erasing a 4-2 deficit with a pair of takedowns. The
second takedown came late in the third period,
shortly after Ashnault cut Fraley, giving his
opponent a 5-4 lead. Ashnault is the reigning
Greater Middlesex Conference, District 12 and
Region 3 champion. He also won an individual title
at the Morris Knolls Invitational. Ashnault is the
Home News Tribune's Wrestler of the Year.
TROY HEILMANN
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Freshman
Highlights: The younger brother of senior Nick
Heilmann, who holds the school's record for career
victories, Troy placed sixth in the state tournament.
One of five outstanding freshmen on the state Group
III championship team, Heilmann also won the
Greater Middlesex Conference and District 12
tournament titles. He placed third at 112 in a loaded
weight class at the Region III Tournament.
Heilmann, who posted a 39-9 record, said he plans
to return next year to 112 pounds, where he hopes
to win a state title. Heilmann won 13 of his matches
by pin. He also won an individual crown at the
season-opening Morris Knolls Invitational.
HERIBERTO QUINTANA
PERTH AMBOY
Year: Senior
Highlights: The all-time winningest wrestler in
school history with a career record of 133-20,
Quintana is a four-time state qualifier, a four-time
district champion, a four-time region finalist and a
four-time Greater Middlesex Conference
Tournament placewinner. He ended the year with a
27-4 record following a 15-5 loss to Hunterdon
Central's Alex Shaffer in the 119-pound state final.
Quintana placed third in the state tournament a year
ago. He is the reigning GMC and District 19
champion. Quintana placed second in the GMC
Tournament as a junior and sophomore and third in
the GMCT as a freshman. Quintana excited crowds
throughout the state this season.
RAY DELANUEZ
EDISON
Year: Senior
Highlights: One of the most consistent performers
in the area over the past two years, DeLaNuez
steadily improved and his strides resulted in a Top
16 finish at the state tournament. The 125-pound
senior posted a 34-3 record on the year. He won a

second straight District 19 and a second
consecutive Region V title. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament champion,
DeLaNuez owns a 91-17 career record. He won a
second straight Elizabeth Minuteman Invitational
Tournament title. DeLaNuez defeated nemesis Mike
Pysniak of Bishop Ahr to win the district and GMC
titles.
SCOTT DELVECCHIO
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Freshman
Highlights: The Tigers rolled to a 29-2 record with
a mix of veterans and newcomers. The contributions
of DelVecchio, who solidified the team's middle
weights with a 36-6 record at 130 pounds, enabled
South Plainfield to earn the No. 1 state ranking in
the New Jersey State Wrestling Coaches Association's
final poll. DelVecchio won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 12 tournaments. He was one
of nine Tigers to qualify for the state tournament,
matching a school record. DelVecchio placed third
in the Region III Tournament. He won 12 matches by
pin.
SAM EMBURGIA
MONROE
Year: Senior
Highlights: A four-time state tournament qualifier,
Emburgia, who previously won just one bout in
Atlantic City, made the most out of his final trip to
Boardwalk Hall, pinning nemesis Nick Heilmann of
South Plainfield in the third-place final. The 135-
pounder had lost all three previous meetings to
Heilmann including two setbacks in the Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament finals. Emburgia
won his second straight Region V title (he was
named Outstanding Wrestler in 2009) and repeated
as a District 20 champion. Emburgia posted a 36-5
record on the year. He led Monroe with a team-best
23 pins.
CONOR HAYES
OLD BRIDGE
Year: Senior
Highlights: A four-year varsity letterwinner, Hayes
holds the school's career record with 120 victories.
He broke the previous mark of 114 wins, which
Kevin Jacoutot set 29 years ago, during the Region
V Tournament. Hayes went 40-4 on the year. He
won a District 20 title and a Region V championship
at 140 pounds. Hayes placed sixth in the state
tournament. Hayes is a three-time district champ
and two-time region champ. In 2009-10, he won
titles at the Matawan Invitational and in the
Hunterdon Central Tournament. Hayes placed third
in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
rebounding from a 2-1 semifinal loss to South
Plainfield's Corey Stasenko with an 8-2 victory over
Edison's Devon Coates in the consolation finals.
RYAN SACCO
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Senior
Highlights: Sacco clinched South Plainfield's 26-24
victory over High Point in the state Group III final
with a memorable 6-5 win over Joey Gaccione in
four overtimes. The victory was the most important
of the four-year starter's career. He went on to place
seventh in the state tournament with a 7-2 decision
over Rahway's Diego Chavez. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference, District 12 and Region III
champion at 145 pounds finished with a 40-5
record. He owns a 107-30 career mark. A three-time
district champion, Sacco led South Plainfield to a

second-place finish at the Virginia Duals.
COLIN HEWITT
FRANKLIN
Year: Junior
Highlights: A nagging right quadriceps muscle
strain forced Hewitt to miss two brief stretches of
the season. The strain caused Hewitt, who posted a
27-3 record, to lose a bout by injury default in late
December. The 152-pounder placed in the state
tournament for the third straight year. Hewitt lost a
tough 2-1 decision to Delsea senior Eric Reger for
third. Many anticipated that matchup to actually be
the state final. Hewitt's only other setback was a
stunning loss — by pin — to Kingsway's Joseph
Renard in the state tournament prequarterfinals.
Owner of a 93-15 career record, Hewitt is a two-
time district and two-time region champion. Hewitt
led a remarkable turnaround at Franklin, which
reached the North 2 Group IV final during the
school's first NJSIAA Team Tournament appearance.
FRANK BOZZOMO
MIDDLESEX
Year: Junior
Highlights: An injury from football season —
Bozzomo started at linebacker and fullback — forced
the Middlesex standout to ease into the wrestling
season. He was held out of a late December
tournament at Hunterdon Central but soon picked
right up where he left off a year ago, finishing 31-3
on the year to improve his career mark to 87-23.
Unlike previous seasons, when Bozzomo was forced t
o wrestle up in class because the Blue Jays were
loaded at his more natural weight, the junior was
able to compete at 160 pounds. There, he won the
District 12 and Region III tournaments and finished
Top 12 in the state tournament. A three-time district
placewinner, Bozzomo finished runner-up in the
Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
dropping a 3-2 decision to Piscataway's Tevin Shaw.
BRENDAN VERCAMMEN
SOUTH BRUNSWICK
Year: Senior
Highlights: The senior became South Brunswick's
third state medal winner in as many years with a 3-2
victory over Plainfield's Dawud Hicks in the 171-
pound fifth-place final. Vercammen ranks third all-
time in victories at South Brunswick with a 97-21
career record. He posted a 37-4 mark this season.
Vercammen won titles at the District 20, Greater
Middlesex Conference and Mustang Classic
tournaments. He finished second at the Region V
Tournament. Last year, Vercammen won a region
title, a district title and placed second in the GMCT.
Vercammen wrestled with an intellect that matched
his physical strength, according to his coaches.
MIKE WAGNER
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Senior
Highlights: Wagner, who will continue his career at
Rutgers University, finished second in the state
tournament at 189 pounds, falling to three-time
state champion Andrew Campolattano of Bound
Brook. Wagner ended the year with a 40-2 record.
Both losses came to Campolattano. Wagner ends his
stellar career with a 90-14 career mark. He won
titles in the Greater Middlesex Conference, District
12, Region III and Morris Knolls Invitational
tournaments. He placed fourth in the state
tournament a year ago. One of South Plainfield's
team captains, Wagner set an example in the
wrestling room with his work ethic and strong

leadership, according to his coaches.
MARC TYSON
MONROE
Year: Senior
Highlights: Known more as one of the state's best
football players, Tyson, who starred at linebacker
and defensive end for the Central Group III c
hampion Falcons, began wrestling just four years
ago. Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport,
Tyson capped his career with a fifth-place finish at
215 pounds in the state tournament. Tyson wrestled
with more brute strength than technique, but the
results were a 37-4 record, including 16 pins. His
pin of eight seconds was the fastest on the team and
one of the fastest in the area. He also led Monroe in
victories. Tyson defeated Perth Amboy's Joel Perez to
win the Region V title. He also won a Greater
Middlesex Conference and District 20
championship.
RYAN MOSKWA
PERTH AMBOY
Year: Junior
Highlights: One of the area's most improved
grapplers, Moskwa raised his career record to 52-
28 after finishing with a 34-6 mark this season. The
gifted heavyweight was one of the constants on a
Perth Amboy team that was in a perpetual state of f
lux. He was a steadying influence on a young team
that lost several competitors to injury, defection and
discipline. Moskwa won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 19 tournament titles. He
placed third in Region V and was a Top 12 finisher
at the state tournament. Last year, Moskwa was
second in the district and sixth in the GMC.

Heilmann, who holds the school's record for career
victories, Troy placed sixth in the state tournament.
One of five outstanding freshmen on the state Group
III championship team, Heilmann also won the
Greater Middlesex Conference and District 12
tournament titles. He placed third at 112 in a loaded
weight class at the Region III Tournament.
Heilmann, who posted a 39-9 record, said he plans
to return next year to 112 pounds, where he hopes
to win a state title. Heilmann won 13 of his matches
by pin. He also won an individual crown at the
season-opening Morris Knolls Invitational.
HERIBERTO QUINTANA
PERTH AMBOY
Year: Senior
Highlights: The all-time winningest wrestler in
school history with a career record of 133-20,
Quintana is a four-time state qualifier, a four-time
district champion, a four-time region finalist and a
four-time Greater Middlesex Conference
Tournament placewinner. He ended the year with a
27-4 record following a 15-5 loss to Hunterdon
Central's Alex Shaffer in the 119-pound state final.
Quintana placed third in the state tournament a year
ago. He is the reigning GMC and District 19
champion. Quintana placed second in the GMC
Tournament as a junior and sophomore and third in
the GMCT as a freshman. Quintana excited crowds
throughout the state this season.
RAY DELANUEZ
EDISON
Year: Senior
Highlights: One of the most consistent performers
in the area over the past two years, DeLaNuez
steadily improved and his strides resulted in a Top
16 finish at the state tournament. The 125-pound
senior posted a 34-3 record on the year. He won a

second straight District 19 and a second
consecutive Region V title. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament champion,
DeLaNuez owns a 91-17 career record. He won a
second straight Elizabeth Minuteman Invitational
Tournament title. DeLaNuez defeated nemesis Mike
Pysniak of Bishop Ahr to win the district and GMC
titles.
SCOTT DELVECCHIO
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Freshman
Highlights: The Tigers rolled to a 29-2 record with
a mix of veterans and newcomers. The contributions
of DelVecchio, who solidified the team's middle
weights with a 36-6 record at 130 pounds, enabled
South Plainfield to earn the No. 1 state ranking in
the New Jersey State Wrestling Coaches Association's
final poll. DelVecchio won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 12 tournaments. He was one
of nine Tigers to qualify for the state tournament,
matching a school record. DelVecchio placed third
in the Region III Tournament. He won 12 matches by
pin.
SAM EMBURGIA
MONROE
Year: Senior
Highlights: A four-time state tournament qualifier,
Emburgia, who previously won just one bout in
Atlantic City, made the most out of his final trip to
Boardwalk Hall, pinning nemesis Nick Heilmann of
South Plainfield in the third-place final. The 135-
pounder had lost all three previous meetings to
Heilmann including two setbacks in the Greater
Middlesex Conference Tournament finals. Emburgia
won his second straight Region V title (he was
named Outstanding Wrestler in 2009) and repeated
as a District 20 champion. Emburgia posted a 36-5
record on the year. He led Monroe with a team-best
23 pins.
CONOR HAYES
OLD BRIDGE
Year: Senior
Highlights: A four-year varsity letterwinner, Hayes
holds the school's career record with 120 victories.
He broke the previous mark of 114 wins, which
Kevin Jacoutot set 29 years ago, during the Region
V Tournament. Hayes went 40-4 on the year. He
won a District 20 title and a Region V championship
at 140 pounds. Hayes placed sixth in the state
tournament. Hayes is a three-time district champ
and two-time region champ. In 2009-10, he won
titles at the Matawan Invitational and in the
Hunterdon Central Tournament. Hayes placed third
in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
rebounding from a 2-1 semifinal loss to South
Plainfield's Corey Stasenko with an 8-2 victory over
Edison's Devon Coates in the consolation finals.
RYAN SACCO
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Senior
Highlights: Sacco clinched South Plainfield's 26-24
victory over High Point in the state Group III final
with a memorable 6-5 win over Joey Gaccione in
four overtimes. The victory was the most important
of the four-year starter's career. He went on to place
seventh in the state tournament with a 7-2 decision
over Rahway's Diego Chavez. The reigning Greater
Middlesex Conference, District 12 and Region III
champion at 145 pounds finished with a 40-5
record. He owns a 107-30 career mark. A three-time
district champion, Sacco led South Plainfield to a

second-place finish at the Virginia Duals.
COLIN HEWITT
FRANKLIN
Year: Junior
Highlights: A nagging right quadriceps muscle
strain forced Hewitt to miss two brief stretches of
the season. The strain caused Hewitt, who posted a
27-3 record, to lose a bout by injury default in late
December. The 152-pounder placed in the state
tournament for the third straight year. Hewitt lost a
tough 2-1 decision to Delsea senior Eric Reger for
third. Many anticipated that matchup to actually be
the state final. Hewitt's only other setback was a
stunning loss — by pin — to Kingsway's Joseph
Renard in the state tournament prequarterfinals.
Owner of a 93-15 career record, Hewitt is a two-
time district and two-time region champion. Hewitt
led a remarkable turnaround at Franklin, which
reached the North 2 Group IV final during the
school's first NJSIAA Team Tournament appearance.
FRANK BOZZOMO
MIDDLESEX
Year: Junior
Highlights: An injury from football season —
Bozzomo started at linebacker and fullback — forced
the Middlesex standout to ease into the wrestling
season. He was held out of a late December
tournament at Hunterdon Central but soon picked
right up where he left off a year ago, finishing 31-3
on the year to improve his career mark to 87-23.
Unlike previous seasons, when Bozzomo was forced t
o wrestle up in class because the Blue Jays were
loaded at his more natural weight, the junior was
able to compete at 160 pounds. There, he won the
District 12 and Region III tournaments and finished
Top 12 in the state tournament. A three-time district
placewinner, Bozzomo finished runner-up in the
Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament,
dropping a 3-2 decision to Piscataway's Tevin Shaw.
BRENDAN VERCAMMEN
SOUTH BRUNSWICK
Year: Senior
Highlights: The senior became South Brunswick's
third state medal winner in as many years with a 3-2
victory over Plainfield's Dawud Hicks in the 171-
pound fifth-place final. Vercammen ranks third all-
time in victories at South Brunswick with a 97-21
career record. He posted a 37-4 mark this season.
Vercammen won titles at the District 20, Greater
Middlesex Conference and Mustang Classic
tournaments. He finished second at the Region V
Tournament. Last year, Vercammen won a region
title, a district title and placed second in the GMCT.
Vercammen wrestled with an intellect that matched
his physical strength, according to his coaches.
MIKE WAGNER
SOUTH PLAINFIELD
Year: Senior
Highlights: Wagner, who will continue his career at
Rutgers University, finished second in the state
tournament at 189 pounds, falling to three-time
state champion Andrew Campolattano of Bound
Brook. Wagner ended the year with a 40-2 record.
Both losses came to Campolattano. Wagner ends his
stellar career with a 90-14 career mark. He won
titles in the Greater Middlesex Conference, District
12, Region III and Morris Knolls Invitational
tournaments. He placed fourth in the state
tournament a year ago. One of South Plainfield's
team captains, Wagner set an example in the
wrestling room with his work ethic and strong

leadership, according to his coaches.
MARC TYSON
MONROE
Year: Senior
Highlights: Known more as one of the state's best
football players, Tyson, who starred at linebacker
and defensive end for the Central Group III c
hampion Falcons, began wrestling just four years
ago. Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport,
Tyson capped his career with a fifth-place finish at
215 pounds in the state tournament. Tyson wrestled
with more brute strength than technique, but the
results were a 37-4 record, including 16 pins. His
pin of eight seconds was the fastest on the team and
one of the fastest in the area. He also led Monroe in
victories. Tyson defeated Perth Amboy's Joel Perez to
win the Region V title. He also won a Greater
Middlesex Conference and District 20
championship.
RYAN MOSKWA
PERTH AMBOY
Year: Junior
Highlights: One of the area's most improved
grapplers, Moskwa raised his career record to 52-
28 after finishing with a 34-6 mark this season. The
gifted heavyweight was one of the constants on a
Perth Amboy team that was in a perpetual state of f
lux. He was a steadying influence on a young team
that lost several competitors to injury, defection and
discipline. Moskwa won the Greater Middlesex
Conference and District 19 tournament titles. He
placed third in Region V and was a Top 12 finisher
at the state tournament. Last year, Moskwa was
second in the district and sixth in the GMC.
