Welcome wrestling fans to the 2009-2010 GMCT FINALS!!!
We have a spectacular lineup for you featuring some of the most talented wrestlers in the GMC today. We will begin wrestling at the 125 pound weight class. We have eight returning finalists, six unbeaten wrestlers, two of which are wrestling each other, four freshman, three defending champions, one of which is seeking his fourth GMCT title, and a rematch of last year’s 112 final between two 100 match winners as our final bout of the evening.
125: Ray De La Nuez (Edison) vs. Mike Pysniak (Bishop Ahr)
THIS GYM IS PACKED! We have what feels like over a thousand people! Now wrestling is Ray De La Nuez from Edison and Mike Pysniak from Bishop Ahr. De La Nuez scores the first takedown, 2-0. As the wrestlers work out of bounds, De La Nuez chooses neutral to give Pysniak his first point, 2-1. Both of these wrestlers know each other well from from the Region 5 and District 19 finals last year.
De La Nuez defers his choice to Pysniak; Pysniak chooses defense. Pysniak quickly excapes to make the score 2-2. We had a stop for blood time and injury time already in this second period, still 2-2. Both wrestlers are excellent at fighting off takedowns, working wizzers, blocking legs, and really being aware of the positions they are in. Pysniak takes his second injury timeout in between periods as De La Nuez chooses defense. There is a wild scramble on the mat, but De La Nuez manages to escape, 3-2. Pysniak missed a loose head and arm while De La Nuez ends up on top with the takedown, 5-2 with 43 seconds remaining. We are stopped for blood time. Pysniak needs to escape and take De La Nuez down to tie it at five. But De La Nuez has done a great job fighting off his shots. De La Nuez choose neutral giving Pysniak another point, 5-3. Pysniak goes for another wild throw that ends up with De La Nuez on top of him and getting back points! The match ends 10-3.
130: Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield) vs. John Gozzolino (Carteret)
We are coming to you from the begining of the third period with the score 6-5 in favor of DelVecchio. Gozzolino chooses defense. DelVecchio brings Gozzolino to his back with a tilt for two backs, 8-5. DelVecchio hits a cradle for three more backs, 11-5. DelVecchio has Gozzolino on his back again, but this time he’s not getting out; PINNED, 5:47!
135: Nick Heilmann (South Plainfield) vs. Sam Emburgia (Monroe)
Heilmann scores the first takedown, 2-0. Emburgia works out for an escape prior to the end of the period, 2-1. Emburgia chooses defense to start the second and escapes, 2-2. Heilmann takes him down again, 4-2. Heilmann chooses defense for the third and escapes to make the score, 5-2. Emburgia was just hit with stalling with 15 seconds remaining. And thats how the match ends, 5-2. Nick Heilmann is now a 4x GMCT champion!
140: Corey Stasenko (South Plainfield) vs. Dave Powell (Piscataway)
Powell scores the first takedown, 2-0. Stasenko narrowly missed a reversal, but settles for an escape, 2-1. Stasenko is a freshman while Powell won his one 100th match earlier in the day, but these two look evenly matched as the first period comes to an end. Powell starts the second on defense an escapes, 3-1. Stasenko chooses defense to start the third. Stasenko scores a quick escape and knocks Powell off the mat going for the takedown, 3-2! Stasenko scores a takedown by the edge of the mat and this gym is booming, 4-3! Stasenko chooses neutral, giving Powell a point, 4-4. Stasenko scores another takedown, 6-4. Stasenko is hit for locking hands, 6-5. Time is running out! Powell is looking for a reversal late! The crowd is going nuts looking for two! The buzzer goes off and the referee has not awarded points. Piscataway is protesting and we aren’t sure of the result. As Powell was seeking the reversal, for the situation he was in, he needed to lock his hands for a cradle or hook the leg. Powell did neither, Stasenko held on to the leg, and the match ends, 6-5. Freshman Corey Stasenko wins!
145: Ryan Sacco (South Plainfield) vs. Jaime Bond (Old Bridge)
Sacco took down Bond and pinned him, 1:35!
152: David Saley (Monroe) vs. Garrett Cuddey (Spotswood)
Saley takes down Cuddey to score the first points of the match, 2-0. Cuddey escapes, 2-1. Saley takes down Cuddey again, 4-1. Saley chooses defense to start the second. Saley scores a reversal, 6-1. Cuddey escapes and Saley takes him down again, 8-2. We start the third period in neutral and Saley takes down Cuddey, 10-2. There is a trend developing as Saley takes down Cuddey and Cuddey escapes. The match ends 18-7.
160: Tevin Shaw (Piscataway) vs. Frank Bozzomo (Middlesex)
Both of these wrestlers are undefeated. Shaw seems to be the aggressor, but Bozzomo is wrestling tough. Shaw had a real close takedown at the edge of the mat, but couldn’t hold Bozzomo. The period ends, 0-0, and Shaw chooses defense for the start of the second. Shaw escapes, while earning Bozzomo a stalling call, 1-0. Shaw scores a takedown, 3-0. We have 16 seconds remaining in the second as we are stopped for blood time. Bozzomo goes for a hard switch but Shaw bails out giving Bozzomo the escape, 3-1. Bozzomo starts the period on defense and quickly earns himself a caution. Bozzomo stands up and escapes, 3-2. Shaw just got hit for stalling. Match over, Shaw, 3-2.
171: Steve Zafrani (Old Bridge) vs. Brendan Vercammen (South Brunswick)
This is Zafrani and Vercammen’s second match this season with Zafrani taking the first match (and certainly not the last), 3-1. One minute has passes and both wrestlers are still dancing. The first ends scoreless. Zafrani defers, Vercamenn chooses defense. One minute has passed and Zafrani is still riding. Vercamenn escapes with 34 seconds remaining, 1-0. Second period ends, Zafrani chooses defense. Zafrani gets to his feet and escapes with 1:07 remaining. Vercamann scores a takedown with 7 seconds left! Zafrani escapes, but it’s not enough. Vercamenn wins, 3-2.
189: Mike Wagner (South Plainfield) vs. Nick Orak (Old Bridge)
Wagner is a defending champion while Orak is a returning finalist. Orak almost tookdown Wagner, but Wagner countered and scored a takedown of his own, 2-0. Orak hits a hard switch for a reversal, 2-2. Wagner escapes, 3-2. Orak defers and Wagner chooses defense for the start of the second. Wagner escapes, 4-2. Wagner hits a takedown, 6-2. Orak chooses neutral to start the third. Orak scores a takedown in a scramble, 6-4. Orak selects neutral, 7-4, 30 seconds. Orak narrowly misses another takedown as the match comes to a close. Mike Wagner wins, 7-4.
215: Seth Yocum (South Plainfield) vs. Marc Tyson (Monroe)
The entire first period was spent with these two dancing on their feet. Tyson choose defense for the second and hit a reversal, 2-0. Yocum escapes, 2-1. Yocum starts the third on defense. Tyson is just hit with a locking hands call, 2-2. Tyson selects neutral, 3-2 Yocum on top. Oh no! Tyson bumps Yocum whill out of bounds and then pushes him and get hit with an unsportsmanlike, 4-2 Yocum. Tyson hits a takedown with 40 seconds left and selects neutral, 5-4 Yocum and this gym is getting loud! 11 seconds left and thats how the match is going to end. Tyson gave up two penalty points in this one. Maybe the locking hands was a mistake, but sportsmanship should never be an issue.
285: Christian Bollin (Middlesex) vs. Ryan Moskwa (Perth Amboy)
I love heavyweight matches. Two giants on the mat and anything can happen. Except in this first period where nothing happened. Bollin chooses defense. Big mistake! Moskwa rolls Bollin to his back and seals the match, 2:33!
103: Luis Nunez (Perth Amboy) vs. Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield)
No points have been score in the first period, but these two are fast and can really move! Ashnault score the first takedown, 2-0. Nunez chooses neutral to start the second. There was a premature takedown called, but the referee rightfully retracted it. The wrestlers are still on there feet with a minute left in the second. Ashnault ultimately does score a takedown, 4-0. Ashnault chooses defense and quickly picks up a caution. Ashnault escapes and picks up another takedown, 7-0. Ashnault picks up an extra point and ends the match picking up an additional three back points, 11-0. Freshman Anthony Ashnault remains undefeated and wins his first GMCT title.
112: Zach Matthijs (Colonia) vs. Troy Heilmann (South Plainfield)
Heilmann scores the first takedown, 2-0. And the period will end that way. Heilmann starts the second on defense. Heilmann scores a reversal, 4-0. Heilmann is doing a real nice job riding out Matthijs even picking up two backs, 6-0. Matthijs chooses defense to start the third. Matthijs is hit with a stalling call. Heilmann had a couple of one counts working tilts, but no points. Heilmann wins, 6-0. South Plainfield has just gone eight for eight with their finalists. Heilmann is also a freshman champion.
119: Heriberto Quintana (Perth Amboy) vs. Anthony Peterson (Edison)
Now for our final match. Peterson won last year’s final. Quintanta starts off with a takedown for the first points, 2-0. Peterson escapes, 2-1. 30 seconds remain. Quintana starts on defense to start the second. Quintana escapes, 3-1. Peterson reverses, 3-3. Quintana reverses him back, 5-3. Quintana is hit with a stalling. Peterson chooses defense, Quintana chooses neutral, 5-4. Quintana with a decisive takedown, 7-4. Peterson is let up, 7-5. 30 seonds! Quintana wins, 7-5.

Champions again: Senior Ramon Santiago of Sayreville and junior David Saley of Monroe won their third district titles. Saley's teammate, junior Sam Emburgia, beat last year's 103-pound champion, Conor Hayes of Old Bridge, 8-4, in the final at 125 pounds to earn his second career title. South River's Adam Mongelli won at 135 pounds after taking gold at 125 last season.
Outstanding Wrestler: Senior Adam Mongelli defeated Sayreville's Christopher Pearson, 9-2, to win South River's lone district title. He had a first-period pin in the quarterfinals and a technical fall in 4:53 during the semifinals to set up his second consecutive district title.
Surprises: Heavyweight Justin Harrison, a third-seeded junior, pinned second-seeded Travis Santiago of Monroe in the semifinals and flattened Sayreville's Tyler Carlock, the top seed, in 1:22 to win the title. Harrison was knocked out of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in the preliminary round on Jan. 31.
Back points: Joe Dougherty of South Brunswick led his squad to a third-place finish and a 19-9 record this season to be named district Coach of the Year. Sayreville won six titles from 103-to-152 pounds but couldn't overcome Old Bridge, which qualified 10 wrestlers for Region 5 competition. Old Bridge crowned just two champions - Steven Zafrani (160) and heavyweight Justin Harrison - but earned seven silver medals and a bronze. Three other Sayreville wrestlers placed fourth. Sayreville's Gary Siriday, a freshman, pinned his final round opponent at 103 in 12 seconds.

The Old Bridge High School wrestling team's once comfortable lead in the District 20 Tournament was slowly slipping away as the Knights, who advanced nine grapplers to the finals, kept losing in the championship round.
Old Bridge opened the finals with three consecutive losses beginning at 171 pounds before third-seeded heavyweight Justin Harrison, who entered the tournament with a deceptive 8-14 record, pinned top-seeded Tyler Carlock of Sayreville in the first period.
The meeting was one of four in the finals between wrestlers from Old Bridge and Sayreville, which was nipping at the Knights' heels.
Old Bridge went 2-7 in the finals, while Sayreville went 6-2 including a 3-1 record in head-to-head meetings between the teams.
In the end, Sayreville couldn't do enough to close the gap and wound up finishing 11 points behind Old Bridge, which won the title with 213 points.
Had the outcome of Harrison's heavyweight bout gone in Carlock's favor, the Bombers would have been crowned champions.
"I beat that kid in the summer duals so I was going in there actually pretty confident," said Harrison. "I had a lot of help from my teammates getting ready for this whole tournament. Our 215-pounder Tom Hunt drove me nuts all week. He kept telling me to get up and work harder. We all did a great job. We worked really hard and it all paid off."
Old Bridge held a 200-170 lead over Sayreville at the end of the semifinal round and appeared in excellent position to knock off the defending champions.
"It was a total team effort because we had a great first and second round," Old Bridge coach Bryan Garnett said. "Some of our weaker weight classes came through. We didn't have a good final round but it was the strength of the program, you could say, that won us the team title. I'm very happy with that."
Old Bridge advanced a total of 10 wrestlers to the Region V Tournament, which begins Tuesday at the Hunterdon Central Field House. Harrison and Steve Zafrani (160) advance as the school's lone champions.
(2 of 3)
Gary Siriday (103), Anthony Geiger (112), Dan Bergfeldt (119), Noel Santiago (130), Patrick Ronan (140) and Ramon Santiago (152) all won titles for Sayreville.
Sam Emburgia (125), David Saley (145) and Mark Tyson (189) won titles for Monroe, which finished fourth as a team with 124 points.
South River's Adam Mongelli (135), the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, South Brunswick's Brendan Vercammen (171) and North Brunswick's Sean Meagher (215) rounded out the district champions. South Brunswick's Joe Dougherty was named the District 20 Coach of the Year.
Vercammen, Tyson and Harrison were the only wrestlers without No. 1 seeds to win titles.
Harrison said the outcome of the team title, which appeared dicey toward the end, was never really in doubt.
"I personally was thinking that we were going to win it because we had a lot of kids in the finals," he said. "I think the team basically went in there with the confidence that we were going to pull away with it."
Harrison, whose team wrestled a brutal regular-season and tournament schedule, said he didn't think about his 10-14 record entering the championship round.
"I thought all my matches this year were all really close," he said, "so I considered that and said, you know what, I can win this tournament if I try."
Harrison said the emotion he felt after teammates and fans congratulated him for leading Old Bridge to the title was ineffable.
"It felt amazing," he said. "I came through for the team but never on something this big. I kept getting people shaking my hand. It felt great, just the feeling of happiness and all."

Team Scores: 1. Old Bridge 213; 2. Sayreville 202; 3. South Brunswick 137 1/2; 4. Monroe 124; 5. East Brunswick 58; 6. Spotswood 50; 7. WW-P South 47; 8. North Brunswick 45; 9. South River 33; 10. New Brunswick 22; 11. WW-P North 19.
